Navy makes splash with recreated Iwo Jima photo

The Navy swimming and diving team went underwater to recreate an iconic moment in U.S. military history, and the photo they released Wednesday afternoon has generated a bit of Internet buzz.

The photo, of 11 members of the team recreating Joe Rosenthal's famous photo of U.S. Marines raising the American flag over Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima, was posted on the main Naval Academy Twitter account Wednesday afternoon and has since been retweeted more than 200 times.

While six team members pose in standing positions at the bottom of the academy's pool, five raise the stars and stripes, paying homage to the classic World War II photograph.

The team tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the photo showed "Navy Men's Swimming and Diving at its finest."

The recreated shot is now the Navy swim team's header photo on Twitter.
