Mervo football to forfeit Friday's game after last week's bench-clearing incident

Mervo’s football team will forfeit Friday’s scheduled home game against North Hagerstown after a squabble involving a few players during last week’s home game with Baltimore City rival Douglass nearly cleared the bench.

Mustangs football coach Patrick Nixon, also the school’s athletic director, said he could not speak about the incident, but he described what happened in a letter sent Wednesday to North Hagerstown officials that was obtained by The Baltimore Sun.

“On Friday September 20th, there was an unfortunate confrontation between two Douglass and Mergenthaler football players. All four players were ejected from the game. After reviewing the film, several members of Mergenthaler football team came on to the field. By rule, any student athlete that leaves the bench area during the time of a fight is disqualified to play in the next game,” Nixon wrote in the letter.

Because so many players were suspended from the game, the Mustangs will have to forfei against the Hubs. The Mustangs will take a loss, while North Hagerstown will be credited with a win and the playoff points.

The Mustangs lost to Douglass, 34-12, and, with the forfeit, drop to 0-4 after a rough early season schedule that includes losses to Patterson, 8-6, and to No. 5 Dunbar, 36-12.

“Please know that this was a learning experience for both the coaching staff and players,” Nixon wrote in the letter. “We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused all parties involved and we fully accept responsibility for our actions. The Mergenthaler football team will resume competition on October 5th against Ben Franklin."

This is the third Baltimore-area football team to forfeit a game this fall.

Atholton had to forfeit its season-opening 35-7 win over Marriotts Ridge for an offseason practice violation. The Raiders coaches were present at a team activity before Aug. 17, the first day of practice for fall teams.

Aberdeen forfeited its 42-23 win at Edgewood for using an ineligible player who had transferred from Havre de Grace. That player is no longer on the roster.
