St. Paul's wrestler Jack Mutchnik commits to American University

Jack Mutchnik, a three-time Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association champion wrestler and National Prep champion at St. Paul's, has committed to wrestle at American University next year.

A senior at St. Paul's, Mutchnik went 47-5 last season and is 140-26 in his high school career. He was an All-Metro first-team selection at 126 pounds last year, when he became St. Paul's first national champion in 31 years.

Mutchnik also won MIAA A Conference and Maryland Independent Schools state titles last year. Mutchnik's brother, Brad Mutchnik, is a 149-pound redshirt freshman on the Eagles' wrestling team. Brad was an All-Metro second-team selection as a St. Paul's senior in 2011 and also was a three-time state champ.

The younger Mutchnik, who has a 3.7 grade point average at St. Paul's, said he picked American over Maryland, Princeton, Brown, Duke and Bucknell after visiting his brother at school this summer.

"I formed a bond with a lot of the teammates there and that was a big part of it, knowing that those teammates are going to be my brothers for the next five years," Jack Mutchnik said. "[My brother] told me nothing but positives."

Eagles assistant coach Kyle Borshoff, for whom Jack Mutchnik wrestled the last two years as a member of the Maryland team in the annual Fargo, N.D., tournament, recruited the St. Paul's senior. That connection made his decision even easier, Mutchnik said.

American's wrestling team also produced a national champion in 2007 when Josh Glenn won at 197 pounds.

Mutchnik said his family was excited to see him join his brother in Washington, D.C.

"They love it because they don’t have to go two places to watch us wrestle," he said.

Jack and Brad Mutchnik's mother, Renee, is the director of marketing and communications for The Baltimore Sun.
