2013 boys cross country Top 10 preseason poll

1. Severna Park

Last season: ranked No. 1

Postseason: Class 4A state champion

Outlook: Seniors Rhys Burgett and Ryan Forsyth headline a strong group of returning runners for the Falcons team that won the Class 4A state title last fall.

2. Loyola

Last season: No. 3

Postseason: MIAA A Conference champion

Outlook: Senior Tyler Spear and Junior Michael Wegner will lead the Dons as they seek a fifth straight MIAA championship. It’ll be tough for anyone to beat Loyola this fall.

3. Reservoir

Last season: No. 9

Postseason: Seventh in Class 3A state title meet

Outlook: Coach Phil Rogers’ Gators feature a balanced group this season, giving them the depth they’ll need to contend in Howard County.

4. Centennial

Last season: No. 5

Postseason: Third in Class 3A state title meet

Outlook: Senior Alec Font returns for the Eagles, who placed third at the Class 3A state title meet last year and will look to fly higher this fall.

5. Dulaney

Last season: Unranked

Postseason: 13th in Class 4A state title meet

Outlook: After struggling last fall, the Lions have a solid lineup — led by junior Adolfo Carvalho and sophomore Eric Walz — that should help them fare better this year.

6. Century

Last season: No. 10

Postseason: Fifth in Class 2A state title meet

Outlook: Senior John Mead, one of the state’s top runners, gives the Knights an excellent building block. If the other runners can keep developing, Century could finish well.

7. River Hill

Last season: Unranked

Postseason: Ninth in Class 3A state title meet

Outlook: Junior Chris Heydrick anchors a Hawks team that should have plenty of depth after placing third in the Howard County championship last fall.

8. Hereford

Last season: No. 2

Postseason: Class 3A state champion

Outlook: The Bulls lost their first five finishers from last year’s squad that won a third straight state title, but Hereford always seems to find competitive runners.

9. Towson

Last season: Unranked

Postseason: 16th in Class 3A state title meet

Outlook: Senior Dylan Kirby leads a pack of Generals runners who should compete in Baltimore County and at the Class 3A level this fall.

10. C. Milton Wright

Last season: Unranked

Postseason: 15th in Class 3A state title meet

Outlook: If everything comes together as the Mustangs expect this fall, they could finish well in the Class 3A state title meet.

Others considered: Catonsville (unranked), Calvert Hall (No. 4), North Harford (unranked), South River (No. 6)
