Local players lead Riviera Beach Spirit 16-and-under team to World Series title

The Riviera Beach Spirit 16-and-under fastpitch softball team won the United States Specialty Sports Association Eastern World Series on Saturday in Salisbury.

Howard rising senior Courtney Merson was named the overall Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Glen Burnie rising senior Jessica Robinson was selected as the offensive MVP.

The Spirit went 9-0 in the five-day event, outscoring its opponents, 77-7.

In addition to Merson and Robinson, Spirit players included: Northeast's Brooke Steinbach, Sabrina Gordon, Mindy Weisgerber and Sarah Kriewald; Chesapeake-AA's Emily Kirby; Seton Keough's Amber Cosgrove and Morgan Scardina; McDonogh's Wendy Folfas and Carliana Folfas; and Long Reach's Christina Doshim.
