Bartholomews win age divisions in XTERRA Atlantic Trail Run

Robert and Cathleen Bartholomew, a couple from Aberdeen, won their respective age divisions in the inaugural XTERRA Atlantic Trail Run Series, which ended last month with the Big Elk Trail Run in Elkton.

Robert did all four races in the series – the others were in Gaithersburg, Wilmington, Del., and Bear, Del. —and Cathleen did three.

Cathleen, 55, took the women's 55-59 division; Robert, 49, was first among men 45-49.

"We have done trail races before; we like them because the trail running community is very friendly," Cathleen said. "There seems to be a camaraderie that doesn't exist with road racing."

Cathleen has been running for 30 years and Robert for 20. They met at a race and have been married for 18 years.

Other Marylanders to win age groups were Laura Gilmore, 32, of Rockville (female 30-34); Jebby Rasputnis, 35, of Silver Spring (female 35-39); Diana Massey, 52, of Laytonsville (female 50-54); Alan Needle, 28, of Elkton (male 25-29); Grant Farrell, 32, of Lancaster (male 30-34); and Glenn Humphrey, 41, of Columbia (male 40-44).

Every age-group champion from the series, which drew more than 1,000 runners from 15 states, was invited to compete at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, on Sept. 22.
