Mount St. Mary's women lose, 63-56, in NEC semifinal

The sixth-seeded Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team saw its Northeast Conference tournament run come to an end with a 63-56 defeat at the hands of top-seeded Quinnipiac in the semifinals Wednesday night at the TD Bank Sports Center.

Jacqueline Brewer hit a career-best six 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 20 points for the Mount.

The Mount (15-16), playing in the NEC semifinals for the first time since 2001, led 34-29 at halftime.

Quinnipiac (29-2) increased its lead to six points with six minutes to go in the game before a layup by Rachel Mathews and Brewer's sixth 3-pointer cut the Mount's deficit to 53-52.

The Mountaineers would get no closer, however, as the Bobcats went 8-for-8 on free throws in the last 3:17 to clinch the win and move on to the championship game.

Three players scored in double figures for Quinnipiac, led by Jasmine Martin's 22 points, including 15 in the second half.

The Mount held a 43-38 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 21 times to the Bobcats' 12.

For the Mountaineers, four players grabbed at least seven rebounds, led by eight from both Mathews and Jessie Kaufman.
