Annapolis runner Hale Bullen earned a spot in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the Feb. 18 issue of Sports Illustrated.
The magazine talks about how the Navy-bound senior set a record while winning the 3,200 meters at the Anne Arundel County championships last month. His time of 9:18.01 easily beat former Broadneck standout Matt Centrowitz's previous mark of 9:40.8. Bullen also won the Class 3A Central Region meet on Feb. 8, and he will compete in the Class 4A-3A state championship next week.
The Class 4A-3A state meet starts Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. The Class 2A-1A meet begins Monday at 11 a.m.
Several teams head into the state meet following dominant performances in the recent regional meets.
In Class 4A, the No. 4 Severna Park girls and No. 6 Old Mill boys both won the Central Region meet. Hereford (No. 3 in girls and No. 4 in boys) swept the Class 3A Central region title.
Also in Class 3A, the No. 5 Reservoir boys won the East Region. The No. 2 Liberty (West) and No. 9 Long Reach (Central) girls won Class 2A region championships, while the No. 2 Century (West) and Marriotts Ridge (Central) boys also won. The Pikesville boys and Northwestern girls took the Class 1A Central Region titles.
As the only local teams to win state championships last year, the Hereford and Liberty girls look to repeat next week.
