Boys Athlete of the Week: Evan Griffin, River Hill, football

The senior had three second-half interceptions and also excelled on offense and special teams in the No. 2 Hawks' 29-7 state semifinal victory over Urbana. At safety, he also made six solo tackles. At halfback, he had 11 carries for 50 yards and three receptions for 26 yards. He also had a 67-yard kickoff return in a game that was 16-7 until the final 2 minutes of the third quarter. Griffin, who also punts, leads the defending Class 3A state champion Hawks in scoring with 21 touchdowns and has more than 2,000 all-purpose yards. He has run 95 times for 916 yards and has caught 30 passes for 619 yards. Griffin, who has a 3.0 GPA, is also the shortstop on River Hill's baseball team and plans to play baseball in college.
