Ex-Terp Merriman to hold annual coat drive Saturday

Shawne Merriman, a former Maryland standout who now plays linebacker for the Buffalo Bills, will hold his annual coat drive Saturday before the Maryland-Florida State game at noon at Byrd Stadium. Over the past 10 years, Merriman and his Lights On Foundation have collected more than 20,000 coats to benefit numerous communities in the region. This year, Merriman's efforts will be focused on those affected by the storm Sandy in New York and New Jersey. Gently used coats, hats, scarves and other cold-weather clothing will be collected at all stadium entrances.

Cheek replacing Boles as St. Frances baseball coach

During an offseason workout Wednesday, St. Frances baseball coach Brian Boles told his players he will not be returning as head coach next season. Boles will be replaced by Carey Cheek, a former player in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and a three-year assistant at St. Frances. Boles will be working as the director of the Drs. Camille and Bill Cosby Community Center, a community outreach facility located on the campus of St. Frances, and scouting for the Detroit Tigers. He said he will continue to assist with the St. Frances baseball program when possible. Boles, a 2000 graduate of St.Frances, has served as head coach for eight seasons. The baseball program, established in 1996, had won only four games prior to Boles' arrival; it has won 73 games since then. Cheek has been an assistant coach at St. Frances since 2010 and also worked as an assistant at Poly for a year. Additionally, he has over 15 years of coaching experience at the amateur level and is head coach of the Baltimore Panthers summer team.

Major League Soccer: The manager of the organization that oversees officiating said the Houston Dynamo's Andre Hainault should have been red-carded for taking down D.C. United's Raphael Augusto late in the first half of Sunday's 3-1 Dynamo victory in the Eastern Conference finals opener. Hainault remained in the match and scored the equalizer early in the second half.
