State hoops: Morgan State loses to Old Dominion, 72-61

DeShawn Painter, Nick Wright and Keenan Palmore led six players in double figures with 12 points apiece as Old Dominion held off visiting Morgan State in the Liberty Tax Classic, 72-61, Saturday night.

Leading 50-49 with 7:04 left, Painter started an 8-0 run that gave the Monarchs (1-1) a cushion. The Bears (1-1) never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

Justin Black had 16 points to lead the Bears. Anthony Hubbard and DeWayne Jackson scored 13 points apiece.

Southern California 87, Coppin State 73: Byron Wesley and J.T. Terrell scored 17 points each to offset freshman guard Patrick Cole's 25 as the host Trojans beat the Eagles in the season opener for both teams in the Maui Invitational.

Hawaii 76, UMES 64: The visiting Hawks forced 21 Warriors turnovers but were unable to come back from a 19-point deficit, losing in the first of their two games at the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Rainbow Classic and season opener. Troy Snyder led all Hawks with 17 points.

Shepherd 102, Bowie State 97: Chad Moore scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Rams past the visiting Bulldogs in the Clarion Hotel Tipoff Classic at the Butcher Center in both teams' season opener.


Towson 63, Manhattan 60, OT: Ciara Webb's 3-pointer with three seconds left in overtime helped the visiting Tigers slip past the Jaspers in the opener for both squads.

After a Manhattan field goal, Tanisha McTiller hit a layup with 43 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 60.
