Coffee Companion (11/8): your daily Ravens fix

Every morning, Monday through Friday, blogger Matt Vensel will hook you up with reading material -- mostly on the Ravens but with some other Baltimore sports stuff, too -- to skim through as you slug down coffee and slack off at the start of your workday. That way he’ll have an excuse to do the same to start his workday, too.


The yellow flags have been piling up for the Ravens this season, and coach John Harbaugh is not happy about it. … Linebacker Terrell Suggs took the blame for Harbaugh’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Cleveland Browns. … Suggs is excited to make his home debut Sunday against the Oakland Raiders. … Five starters sat out Wednesday’s practice, including defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and free safety Ed Reed. … The Ravens signed tight end Alex Silvestro to their practice squad and said goodbye to quarterback Dennis Dixon.


Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe picked a good time to step up his play. … With four interceptions in his past five games, cornerback Cary Williams is on a roll. … Tight ends Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson might be able to find some open areas against the Raiders. … Pro Bowl right guard Marshal Yanda made Pete Prisco’s midseason All-Pro team. … Jamison Hensley did a first-half team for the AFC North, and five Ravens were on it.


With Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson likely out Sunday, the Raiders will have to lean on quarterback Carson Palmer even more. … The Raiders did not have any new running backs at Wednesday’s practice. … Linebacker Aaron Curry is set to make his season debut against the Ravens. … Despite all the mistakes from his 3-5 team, Raiders coach Dennis Allen has kept his cool.


In this week’s edition of “Five Ravens stats that stand out,” I took a look at the completion percentage of quarterback Joe Flacco, the team’s turnover differential, and running lanes that Pro Bowl back Ray Rice might try to exploit Sunday against the Raiders.
