Ex-Loyola star Walker to play for Greek team
Former Loyola forward Shane Walker has signed a professional contract with AS Apollon Patras and will begin his career this week in Greece's A1 League. Walker, who graduated with a communications degree in May, helped lead the Greyhounds to the NCAA tournament last season for the second time in school history. He was the only player to start all 33 games last season and averaged nine points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a senior. "We are thrilled for Shane as he's starting his pro career in Europe," coach Jimmy Patsos said. "Shane was a great leader for us and did all of the little things necessary for us to win a championship and reach the NCAA tournament. He made things happen for us on offense and defense, and he molded himself into someone that is going to be a very good player over there." The native of Northampton, England, who began his career at Maryland, ranks second on the all-time blocked-shots list with 135 after finishing with 42 last season. He also had 50 assists, 23 steals and made 25 3-pointers as the Greyhounds rolled to a 24-9 record.

Maryland beats Va., 16-8, for MAPGA Capital Cup
Maryland won the junior-level Middle Atlantic PGA Capital Cup, 16-8, over Virginia at Country Club of Virginia (Tuckahoe Creek course) in Richmond on Sunday. After the first day of play, Maryland was ahead 71/2 to 41/2, then ran away with the competition on Sunday, winning eight of the 12 matches. Sam Clark of Hampstead, the last member of the team to qualify, was the Capital Cup Most Valuable Player, winning all three matches over the weekend. Among results, Rachel Lee of Woodstock defeated Andrew Butts of Salem, Va., 2 up. Lee never trailed in the match, but Butts squared it up two times before Lee birdied the 18th hole to win. Rij Patel of Cockeysville downed Brandon Berry of Great Falls, Va., 2 and 1. Berry was up early in the match, but Patel won the seventh hole and never looked back. Connor Flach of Ellicott City defeated Derick Paxton of Great Falls, Va., 4 and 2. Flach played very well throughout the match and was 3-under-par.
LPGA: Baltimore native Stephanie Connelly will compete in the Symetra Tour Challenge at Musket Ridge from Friday to Sunday at Musket Ridge Golf Course in Myersville. The event is the only women's professional golf tournament in Maryland. Part of the "Road to the LPGA," each player in the field is playing to earn LPGA Tour membership in 2013 by finishing in the top 10 on the Symetra Tour money list at season's end.

Towson tabs LaMonica as women's lacrosse assistant
Michael LaMonica, who served as a volunteer assistant coach in 2012 for the Towson University women's lacrosse team, has been hired as a full-time assistant coach. LaMonica was a four-year starter at midfield at Maryland from 1999 to 2002 and worked as a volunteer assistant for the Mount St. Mary's women in 2010. He also served as the offensive coordinator at Calvert Hall from 2003 to 2011.
More women's college lacrosse: Loyola announced that five players will join the program in the fall as the class of 2016: Shannon Aikens (Mercy), daughter of the late Diane Geppi-Aikens, a former Greyhounds coach; Maddy Blakeman of Saint Edward's School in Vero Beach, Fla.; Katrina Geiger of Haverford High in Havertown, Pa.; Maddy Lesher of Archbishop Carroll in Radnor, Pa.; and Molly Wolf (Bryn Mawr).
Maryland football: The Terps will hold walk-on tryouts Sept. 3. Interested players must be full-time students who are currently enrolled at the university. Candidates should report to the Gossett Football Team House at 2:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to try out for the team must bring the completed packet found at the top of this release as well as a physical signed by a doctor within the last six months.
