Ryan Holland delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and lift host Maryland (6-1) to a 3-2 victory over Manhattan (1-4). The Terps are off to their best start in 37 years and have an ERA of 1.20. ... Coach Mike Gottlieb earned his 600th and 601st career victories as Towson (3-5) earned 9-2 and 6-0 victories over visiting Central Connecticut (0-2). In the nightcap, freshman right-hander Taylor Clarke teamed up with senior right-hander Tyler Austin to pitch a one-hitter. ... Sophomore second baseman Nick Marinelli (Marriotts Ridge) hit his first college home run, tying the score at 1 in the fifth inning, and Salisbury (6-1), No. 6 in Division III, pulled away for a 12-1 victory over visiting Washington College (1-1).

Towson's Nwankwo on CAA's All-Defensive team

Towson senior center Robert Nwankwo, who averaged 9.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks, was selected to the Colonial Athletic Association's All-Defensive team. Tigers sophomore forward Erique Gumbs was named to the All-Academic second team. Drexel freshman guard Damion Lee, who lives in Owings Mills and attended St.Thomas More, was named Rookie of the Year. Delaware sophomore guard Devon Saddler (Aberdeen) made the All-CAA second team.

More men's basketball: UMBC sophomore forward Chase Plummer was named to the All-America East second team.

Women's basketball: Maryland freshman Brene Moseley and senior Kim Rodgers were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's All-Academic Team.

Football: The Navy spring game will be held April 14 at noon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Admission is free, and there is a $5 charge to park. The Midshipmen will begin practicing March 19. ... The Towson coaching staff will host its Tiger Football Coaching Clinic for high school coaches on April 6-7. Wrestling: Navy finished 10th in the nation in attendance for dual matches, averaging 1,595 fans, including 3,131 for the match against Army on Feb. 17. Iowa was first with 9,014.

Gilman's Poggi ranked 71st nationally for '13

Gilman junior defensive tackle Henry Poggi is ranked the No. 71 high school football prospect for the 2013 season, according to the Offense-Defense Sports Top 435 released Thursday. The group that puts on the annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl ranked the players "based on their production, level of competition, coaching feedback, tape evaluation, and more." Poggi, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound son of Gilman coach Biff Poggi, had 10 sacks and 49 tackles as a junior last fall, earning All-Metro honors. He's joined on the Offense-Defense Top 435 by Gilman All-Metro outside linebacker Micah Kiser (ranked No. 246) and Calvert Hall athlete Delando Johnson (No. 310).

Charlottesville lacrosse chapter inducts Proutt

Robert G. "Bobby" Proutt has been inducted into the Charlottesville (Va.) chapter of the USLacrosse Hall of Fame. Proutt, 83, of Monkton, played at St. Paul and the University of Virginia, making the All-America first team in 1949, second team in 1950 and honorable mention in 1948 as a defenseman.
