The Maryland State Wrestling Association has found a way to let Broadneck senior Collin Harrell wrestle after the controversial end to his final postseason.
Harrell has been invited to the Haswell Franklin Maryland Senior All-Star Classic March 6 at McDaniel College. The tournament, which pits the highest finishing seniors in the puiblic and private schools in an all-star competition.
Two weeks ago, Harrell was ejected from North County High School and not allowed to compete in his 138-pound weight class at the Anne Arundel County tournament after getting involved in a conflict between his mother, Melloni Harrell and North County assistant principal Laura Dudeck.
The outcome was that Harrell could not qualify for the MPSSAA state tournament, which concludes this weekend at Cole Field House in College Park.
The MSWA usually invites the highest finishing seniors at the Maryland Independent Schools state tournament and the MPSSAA state tournament to compete. But MSWA president Neil Adleberg did what the MPSSAA didn't and decided to bend the rules.
"I talked to the 4A-3A coaches asked if they would mind if we invited Collin," Adleberg said. "They all know the situation, and they all were supportive of the idea of letting him end his career on the mat. Now, Collin is excited and the coaches are excited."
Scott Harrell, Collin's dad father the wrestling coach at Broadneck, thanked Adleberg in an email to the MSWA's main wrestling forum: "It is with the greatest amount of humility and gratitude that we ... thank you and the MSWA for allowing Collin in victory or defeat to end his career where it should have been, "on the mat."
