Terps baseball wins second straight series
Maryland's offense produced a season-high 15 hits, David Carroll (1-0) matched a career high with eight strikeouts in seven innings and the Terps earned an 11-1 baseball victory against Purdue (4-1) on Saturday night in Greenville, N.C. Maryland (4-1), which beat Western Carolina on Saturday morning, clinched a second consecutive series win. It's the first time the Terps have won back-to-back series since 2007, when they won the first five series of the season. They'll go for a weekend sweep against host East Carolina today at 2 p.m. Three sophomores led Maryland offensively: Second baseman Kyle Convissar (Severna Park) went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, first baseman Tim Kiene went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and center fielder Charlie White went 3-for-4 with two runs.
Brady Kirkpatrick 1/3 scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over Western Carolina on Saturday. The Terps (3-1) are off to their best start since 2007, when they opened the year 4-1. Maryland's team ERA is 1.85. The Catamounts (4-1) had come into the game averaging 10 runs per game, but Kirkpatrick, a sophomore, allowed just two hits in his first seven innings of work, and Jimmy Reed 2/3, retiring all five batters he faced.
More college baseball: Kyler Morgan pitched a shutout in the opener and Dustin Sollars drove in six runs, leading Longwood to a doubleheader sweep of Coppin State, 11-0 and 13-1, at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover. ... Jordan Nicholson and Derek Howell combined to pitch a three-hitter as host Louisiana-Lafayette (3-3) earned an 11-1 victory over Towson (1-4).
College softball: Maryland used a four-run burst in the bottom of the fifth inning and strong pitching from senior Kendra Knight to beat Wisconsin, 4-3, in Kissimmee, Fla. After a six-inning scoreless standoff against the Badgers (4-4), freshman Shannon Bustillos hit a two-out double to score the breakthrough runs for the Terps (9-2).
College wrestling: Johns Hopkins earned five individual titles and claimed the first Centennial Conference championship in school history, as the Blue Jays earned 79 points to edge runner-up Ursinus, which totaled 73.5 points. Hopkins got titles from freshman Paul Bewak (125), sophomores Henry Stauber (149) and Matt Fusaro (157) and juniors Paul Marcello (141) and Reid Mosquera (197). Coach Keith Norris grabbed his first Centennial Conference Coach of the Year award.
Women's college lacrosse: Host Elizabethtown (1-1) broke a tie at 4 by scoring five straight and won 18-8 over McDaniel (0-1). Danielle Entrot (Centennial) and Paige Messersmith (Dulaney) each had a hat trick for the Green Terror. ... Visiting Stevenson (0-1) rallied in the second half, but fell short, losing 10-8 to Washington & Lee (2-0). ... Helene Butler made 10 saves in a losing effort as Hood (1-2) fell, 21-8, to King's College (1-0). ... Lauriann Parker and Amelia Tenberg each scored a goal in a losing effort as visiting St. Mary's (0-2) lost 9-2 to Dickinson (2-0).
Women's college gymnastics: Senior Kacy Catanzaro earned a career-high 39.25 all-around score as she led Towson (12-5) to its second-highest team score of the season in a meet at No. 19 North Carolina State on Friday night.
Minor league basketball: Adrian Bowie (Maryland) scored 27 points, but the Bay Area Shuckers (4-4), who had been averaging more than 127 points, lost, 131-96, to the Beltway Bombers in an Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League game in La Plata.
