3-point play lifts Rider men past Loyola, 83-79

Novar Gadson's layup and free throw with 33 seconds remaining put Rider (12-18, 9-8) ahead to stay in an 83-79 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against visiting Loyola (20-8, 12-5) on Friday night. Dylon Cormier (Cardinal Gibbons) had given the Greyhounds a 79-78 lead with a twisting layup with 52 seconds left. Erik Etherly and Shane Walker led Loyola with 14 points. Justin Drummond added 13, and R.J. Williams (St. Frances) matched his career high with 11.

More state men's college basketball: Hayk Gyokchyan had a team-high 23 points for host and top seed Franklin & Marshall (24-2) in a 100-69 Centennial Conference tournament semifinal win over fifth seed Washington College (14-13). ... Bowie State senior forward-center Travis Hyman (Old Mill, Anne Arundel Community College) was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Hyman was joined on the All-CIAA team by Bowie State junior forward Byron Westmorland (Mervo, Baltimore City Community College), Bowie State senior guard Darren Clark and Lincoln senior forward Denzel Mooney (Western Tech). ... Bowie State (20-5) dropped one spot to sixth in the second NCAA Division II Atlantic Region poll; West Liberty (W.Va.) (24-1) is first. The rankings are used to determine seedings in the NCAA tournament.

State women's college basketball: Loyola (13-15, 9-8) pulled within two with two minutes left but lost, 44-42, to host Fairfield (21-7, 14-3). Katie Sheahin had 16 points in the loss.

National men's college lacrosse: Josh Dionne had four points for No. 9 and host Duke (2-1) in its 12-8 win over No. 15 Penn (0-1).

National women's college lacrosse: Abbey Friend had three of her four goals in the first half to push the No. 3 and host North Carolina (4-0) to a 16-7 victory over No. 16 Albany (1-1). ... Fourth-ranked Florida (3-1) went on a 9-0 run to seal its 23-5 win over visiting Siena (0-1). Ashley Bruns (Mount Hebron) had a game-high 11 points for the Gators.

Women's college lacrosse: Candace Rossi had five points and one assist for Hopkins (3-0) in its 20-5 win over visiting Denver (0-1). ... A goal by Sarah Castle put host York (2-0) on top 13 seconds into the game. The Spartans kept the lead for an 18-4 victory over Goucher (0-1).

College softball: Washington College named senior Sally Snover and juniors Shaelan Nottingham and Brittany Walter (C. Milton Wright) captains.

College baseball: UMBC was picked to finish sixth in the America East preseason poll.

Horse racing: The Lumber Guy is the 7-5 morning-line favorite for today's $100,000 Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel Park. The seven-furlong test drew a field of nine colts and geldings. The Lumber Guy earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 90 in his only start, a maiden win at Aqueduct last month for trainer Michael Hushion. The son of Grand Slam showed early speed against restricted company before drawing off to a 91/4-length victory. Julian Pimentel gets his first chance on the colt. Graham Motion will counter with Friscan (5-2), a son of Two Punch who finished third in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs last summer while in Al Stall's barn. Friscan romped over optional/claiming company here late last month at 51/2 furlongs for his new connections.

Mascots: Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards is hosting a "Meet the Mascots" program today at 1 p.m. The family-oriented event will feature a "behind the mask" discussion with popular local mascots, including Poe (Ravens), Testudo (Maryland) and the Oriole Bird. The program is free with the price of admission to the museum. The mascots will be available for photographs after the program.
