Terps' rally isn't enough in 6-5 baseball loss to No. 14 UCLA
Tim Kiene hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to help Maryland erase a 5-1 deficit, but No. 14 UCLA countered with a run in the bottom half and held the visiting Terps scoreless the rest of the way in a 6-5 baseball victory Saturday afternoon. Maryland opened the season Friday night by overcoming a one-run deficit with two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Bruins, 2-1. That victory broke the Terps' 10-game losing streak in openers — their last season-opening win had come in 2001 against North Carolina A&T.
Wrestling: Second-ranked Josh Asper (Hereford) and 19th-ranked Kyle John recorded back-to-back technical falls to propel No. 17 Maryland (15-1, 4-1 ACC) to a 30-10 victory over host George Mason on Thursday night.
Men's soccer: Washington College coach Drew Hoffman will resign March 19 to become development officer within the school's Office of Advancement. ... Joe Fiedler, the boys coach at Loch Raven from 1997 to 2011, was named coach at CCBC-Essex. Fiedler replaces Rich Zinkand, who resigned after eight seasons to coach Calvert Hall.
Women's volleyball: UMBC named Jenni Hirneisen an assistant coach; she spent the past three seasons at her alma mater, Colorado State, and served the USA national team as an assistant technical director.
Women's gymnastics: Towson senior Lindsay Poplaski was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference as the co-winner of the Gymnast of the Week award, and freshman Samantha Lutz was named the co-winner of the Rookie of the Week award.
Men's golf: Loyola athletic director Jim Paquette was named to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee, effective in September. ... Mount St. Mary's was picked to finish seventh in the Northeast Conference preseason poll.
Women's golf: Mount St. Mary's was picked in a tie for eighth in the Northeast Conference preseason poll.
Track and field: Hood senior vault specialist Chris DiGangi and sophomore thrower Meghan Rose (Eastern Tech) were named Capital Athletic Conference Male Track Performer of the Week and Female Field Performer of the Week, respectively.

Boxer Douglas moves closer to Olympic berth
Flyweight Tyrieshia Douglas, who trains at Upton Boxing Center in West Baltimore, beat New York's Christina Cruz, 22-14, at the U.S. Olympic women's trials Friday night in Airway Heights, Wash., and advanced to the final round. Douglas was scheduled to fight six-time national champion Marlen Esparza on Saturday and needed a win to force a winner-take-all fight today for the 112-pound title.
Minor league basketball: Adrian Bowie (Maryland) scored 36 points to help the host Bay Area Shuckers (4-4) hand the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League-leading Palmieri Jeans (7-1) their first loss, 133-123. Jamarr Johnson added 23 points, and Derek Savage had 21. Fahreed Cheatham led Palmieri with 41 points.
NFL: The New England Patriots re-signed running back Eric Kettani (Navy) to their 80-man roster, according to multiple reports last week. If the 5-foot-11, 235-pound running back is cleared by the Navy to resume his football career, he could ultimately find a spot on New England's reserve/military list.
