Maria Edwards and Ashley Hunter combined to make three free throws in the final 10.6 seconds to seal No. 12 John Carroll’s 42-38 victory over St. Mary’s for the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference basketball championship Saturday at UMBC’s RAC Arena.
The Patriots had a five-point lead after Emily Soller hit a pair of free throws with 1:26 to go, but Delia Ruttum answered with a pair for St. Mary’s to pull within 39-36.
John Carroll then turned the ball over out of bounds under the Saints’ basket. Leah Hurst hit Stephanie Lazo for a basket off the inbounds pass. Lazo also drew a foul and had a chance to tie the game with 35 seconds to go, but she could not convert the free throw.
Edwards hit the front end of a one-and-one for a 40-38 Patriots lead with 10.6 seconds remaining.
The Saints had one more chance tie when Lazo was fouled in the lane, but her shot was too long. Hunter was fouled on the rebound and hit both ends of the double bonus.
The Patriots, who got 15 points from Soller, finish 23-3 with a sweep of their B Conference opponents. Edwards and Miranda Ripken scored eight points each.
The Saints (15-7) were led by Jennifer Broussard with 13 points.
