No. 2 Maryland routs Wm. & Mary in opener
The No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team began the 2012 season with nine unanswered goals, cruising to a 19-8 win against visiting William & Mary on Sunday. Junior Katie Schwarzmann (Century) led the way for the Terps (1-0) with five goals and also had three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Redshirt freshman Brooke Griffin (South River) shone in her Terps debut with four goals. Beth Glaros (Wilde Lake) had three goals, while Alex Aust, Karri Ellen Johnson (Broadneck) and Kelly McPartland had two apiece. Kristy Black (Glenelg) also scored a goal for Maryland. Despite bitter weather with wind-chill temperatures hanging around the 20-degree mark, the Terps had little problem catching fire, scoring 10 goals in the first 17 minutes. Glaros, Johnson, Schwarzmann and Griffin had two goals apiece. Maryland picked up its decisive 10-goal cushion with a goal from McPartland with 10:32 remaining in the first half and never relinquished the running clock. Ten freshmen made their college debuts, and rookies McPartland, Megan Douty and Erin Collins combined for eight of the Terps' 19 draw controls on the day. "I was very pleased with our performance today," Maryland coach Cathy Reese said. "You can't control the weather. We talked about being ready for anything, and the girls stepped on the field and had a good time today. We saw some good stuff from everybody, and that's always the way you want to start the season as a coach." Five of William & Mary's eight goals came on free-position shots. The Terps' defense caused seven turnovers and scooped nine ground balls. Maryland returns to action at 4p.m. Thursday against visiting Delaware. Admission will be free.

No. 1 Salisbury cruises past Greensboro to start season
The No. 1 Salisbury men's lacrosse team opened its defense of the national Division III championship with a 19-6 win at Greensboro. The Sea Gulls opened the scoring with a goal from senior attackman Erik Krum on an assist from fellow classmate Matt Cannone. Greensboro answered with a goal to tie the game at 1, but the Sea Gulls came back with a 6-0 run, which lasted into the second quarter, and never looked back. With a 7-2 lead in the second quarter, the Sea Gulls got a man-up goal from senior midfielder Kyle Quist on an assist from senior midfielder Sam Bradman before Bradman capped off the half with a goal of his own from senior Tony Mendes, who finished the game with two assists. Salisbury took a 9-2 lead into the half. Greensboro began the second half with a goal before the Sea Gulls ripped off another six-goal run. Krum (five goals and one assist) and Cannone (three goals and three assists) led the team. Bradman finished with three goals and two assists. The Sea Gulls also received goals from sophomore midfielders Sean Fitzgerald, Greg Korvin and Tim Stone; senior attackman Matt Pierotti; and freshman midfielder Ryan Lucey. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor picked up his first career win with eight saves. The Sea Gulls finished the game with 48 shots to Greensboro's 20 and converted 21 of 22 clears. The Sea Gulls' next game is their home opener at 1 p.m. Saturday against No. 8 Lynchburg.
Division I: Davey Emala (Gilman) scored twice and No. 6 North Carolina got goals from 12 different players and played its entire roster as in a 20-7 win over host Mercer (0-2). The Tar Heels (2-0) also received goals from R.G. Keenan (Boys' Latin) and Pat Foster (Boys' Latin). Freshmen scored 13 goals and had seven assists for the Heels; the 13 goals are a school record for freshmen in a game. ... In its varsity debut, Michigan fell, 13-9, to Detroit Mercy (1-2) in Pontiac, Mich. Sophomore midfielder Doug Bryant scored twice to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. Shayne Adams and Alex Maini scored four goals and three goals, respectively, to lead the Titans.
TV: Navy's game at Jacksonville on Sunday will be televised on NBC Sports Network, formerly known as Versus. CBS Sports Network will broadcast the Midshipmen's home games against Lehigh on March 30 (7 p.m.) and Johns Hopkins on April 21 (noon), and their game at Army on April 14 (noon).

Terps beat Duke, share ACC crown in wrestling
On senior day, 19th-ranked senior Kyle John finished his career with a major decision to lead the No. 17 Maryland wrestling team (14-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) to a 22-12 win over visiting Duke (3-7, 0-4) as the Terps clinched a share of the regular-season ACC title for the second time in three seasons.
Track and field: Former Broadneck star Matthew Centrowitz won the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on Saturday night, finishing in 3 minutes, 53.92 seconds to break the New York City Armory record. Centrowitz was followed by Americans Miles Batty (3:54.54) and Garrett Heath (3:55.24). The previous Armory record of 3:54.98 was set by Ireland's Mark Carroll in 2000. The Millrose Games were moved to the Armory this year from Madison Square Garden. Centrowitz, 22, announced in November that he was turning pro and skipping his senior year of eligibility at Oregon to improve his chances of qualifying for this year's Olympics in London. He has since signed an endorsement deal with Nike and still trains on the Oregon campus. The bronze medalist in the 1,500 meters at this past summer's world championships, Centrowitz is the son of Matt Centrowitz Sr., who competed at the Millrose Games during his running career.
Running: Marty Liquori, a former U.S. record holder in the two-mile run and one of the founders of the organization Bring Back the Mile, will appear on "The Runaround" at 5 p.m. today on 1300 AM to discuss restoring the mile run to the forefront of competitive track and field in lieu of the 1,500-meter and 1,600-meter runs. Liquori, who was ranked No.1 in the world for the mile run in 1969 and 1971, was most famous for his classic showdowns with former mile world and U.S. record holder Jim Ryun. Liquori clocked a personal best of 3:52.2 in the mile and was the gold medalist at the 1971 Pan American Games.
College softball: Coppin State senior Paige Arnold was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and the Eagles were chosen to finish second in the Northern Division in voting by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Morgan State was picked to finish tied for fifth, and UMES was voted to finish seventh and last.
College gymnastics: Towson senior Kacy Catanzaro was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week last week, and fellow senior Avis Hixon was presented with the conference's Coaches Choice Award.
