McDaniel breaks ground on stadium

McDaniel College broke ground Friday on an $8million stadium project to be named for trustee and alumnus Kenneth R. Gill and designed by architect Marshall Craft Associates of Baltimore. Construction on the two-story, brick-and-concrete multipurpose stadium is set to begin this month with a targeted completion date for the first home football game on Sept. 15. Gill, who graduated in 1961 and played football for the Green Terror for four seasons, made gifts totaling $2.25 million toward the project and served as chair of the Stadium Project Committee, which raised more than $7.7 million in cash and pledges. The stadium will retain its bowl seating and tradition of drive-in tailgating while increasing seating capacity by about 500. Seats will total about 1,434, including accessible seats. The facility will be built on the site of the current grandstand. Features include concessions, public restrooms, coaches' rooms, observation boxes, a large press box, a training room, filming areas, home- and visiting-team meeting rooms and reception and gathering rooms. New field lighting was installed in 2010 in preparation of the new stadium.

More college football: A story in Thursday's sports section included Joshua Davis as one of six Dunbar players signing national letters of intent to play football on scholarship. Davis, who will play at Morgan State, is not receiving an athletic scholarship. He is receiving need-based financial aid, which allows Morgan to not use one of its football scholarships on him, Dunbar coach Lawrence Smith said.

Men's college basketball: Sophomore forward J.J. Avila, who leads Navy in scoring (15.9 points a game) and rebounding (7.2 a game), has been suspended for at least one game — today against Lafayette — because of an undisclosed violation of academy rules, The Capital in Annapolis reported. Avila also leads the team in assists and steals. The Midshipmen (3-18, 0-6 Patriot League) have lost 14 straight games.

Women's college basketball: Marymount junior guard Katelyn Fischer (Seton Keough) and Stevenson senior forward Daniela Poss were named to the Capital One Academic All-District team.

Women's college soccer: UMBC named Steve Campbell assistant coach. Campbell has coached youth teams in Maryland and has been a men's volunteer and women's assistant at Maryland, his alma mater.

Women's college lacrosse: Navy was voted the preseason favorite to win a third straight Patriot League title. The Mids were the unanimous choice in balloting by coaches and sports information directors. Navy junior attack Jasmine DePompeo was the unanimous choice as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Laurel Park: Charles Town-based Dance to Bristol is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in today's $100,000 Marshua Stakes at Laurel Park. The daughter of Speightstown broke her maiden and then placed in the Smart Halo Stakes at Laurel before winning the Pandera Stakes at Aqueduct in December. She went back to Aqueduct on Jan. 14 and finished fourth in the Ruthless Stakes. Elias Peltroche keeps the mount for trainer Ollie Figgins.

More horse racing: Graham Motion's 3-year-old State of Play will run in the Grade III Sam F. Davis Stakes today at Tampa Bay Downs. It will be the horse's first start on dirt.

Major League Soccer: D.C. United signed forward Hamdi Salihi, 28, as a designated player. The Albanian international has 163 goals in 289 professional matches. United waived forward Blake Brettschneider, 22.
