Colts' membership certificate up for bid

A rare piece of Baltimore Colts memorabilia — the team's 1953 NFL Certificate of Membership — is being auctioned off this weekend by Hunt Auctions of Exton, Pa. Online bidding for the Colts' keepsake (lot 138) ends at 8 p.m. today at huntauctions.com. Live bidding begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. Call 610-524-0822 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. today to register. As of Thursday night, the high bid for the certificate, which is signed by then-NFL commissioner Bert Bell, was $19,117. The fledgling Colts finished 3-9 in 1953 but won the league title five years later.

Orioles: A spokesperson for Brooks Robinson said the Hall of Fame third baseman is still recuperating in the hospital after breaking two bones in his shoulder area after a fall from a stage at a charity event last Friday in Florida.

Golf: Danny Balin of Rockville won the 59th annual PGA Stroke Play Championship at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. An assistant professional at Burning Tree Country Club in Greenwich, Conn., Balin, 29, went from three down after 54 holes to win by three on the Wanamaker Course with a closing round of 67 for 276. Jim Estes of Germantown shot a 73 and finished at 288.

NHL: The Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Kevin Marshall from the Philadelphia Flyers for right wing Matt Ford and acquired center Mike Carman from the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Danny Richmond. Both players will report to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. The Capitals also recalled forward Keith Aucoin, 33, from Hershey, where he leads the AHL in points (70) and assists (59), and assigned forward Cody Eakin to Hershey.

Men's college lacrosse: Johns Hopkins is ranked second in the USILA Preseason Coaches Poll. The Blue Jays grabbed 236 points and trail Virginia (280). Cornell and Duke (235) are tied for third. Maryland (197) is seventh.
