Virginia men ranked preseason No. 1
The Virginia men's lacrosse team was picked by Lacrosse Magazine to repeat as NCAA champion, as was the Northwestern women's team. Three area Division I men's teams are ranked in the magazine's preseason Top 20: No. 3 Johns Hopkins, No. 7 Maryland and No. 19 Loyola. On the women's side, Maryland is ranked second in Division I and Loyola is 10th. Cornell senior attackman Rob Pannell was chosen as Division I men's preseason Player of the Year, and Northwestern senior midfielder-attacker Shannon Smith took the top women's honors. The Salisbury men were picked to defend their DivisionIII title, and midfielder Sam Bradman was named preseason Player of the Year. Stevenson is ranked seventh. The Salisbury women are No. 6 in Division III. Gettysburg is ranked first. In the junior college men's ranks, CCBC-Essex is ranked second and Harford seventh. Four local teams are ranked among the junior college women's Top 20: No. 2 Anne Arundel, No. 3 CCBC-Catonsville, No. 5 Harford and No. 6 Howard.

Good Counsel's Watson commits to Purdue
Good Counsel defensive lineman Ryan Watson committed Wednesday to Purdue. The four-star prospect from Ellicott City picked the Boilermakers over Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech. "I just plan on playing to my full potential and getting on the field early," Watson said.
