Gilman's Jones to skip Chesapeake Bowl

Gilman's Cyrus Jones Jr. has opted not to play in Friday night's Chesapeake Bowl senior all-star football game.

Jones, The Baltimore Sun's Offensive Player of the Year, said Thursday he didn't want to risk getting hurt and having to sit out next week's Under Armour All-America High School Football Game. Last year, Gilman's Darius Jennings suffered a concussion in the Chesapeake Bowl that kept him sidelined for the Under Armour game.

"I didn't want to risk anything," Jones said. "Just watching Darius last year getting hurt and not being able to play in the Under Armour game and I was going to have to leave right after the game (to head to Florida for the Under Armour game). There was just too much going on, so I just decided to sit out."

Jones, who also made the All-America lists for ESPN High School, rivals.com and Sports Illustrated.com, is set to play in the Under Armour game Jan. 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The game will be aired live on ESPN.

While in St. Petersburg, Jones is expected to announce his college choice from among Alabama, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Ohio State.
