West only freshman on Walter Camp team
Towson running back Terrance West (Northwestern) was honored Friday as a first-team selection on the Walter Camp Football Foundation Football Championship Subdivision All-America team. He was the only freshman named to the first or second teams, which are selected by head coaches and sports information directors at FCS schools. The second-leading rusher in the Colonial Athletic Association, West rushed for 1,294 yards and scored an FCS-best 29 touchdowns in 11 games. He ranked 12th in the FCS with 117.6 rushing yards per game and averaged 6.7 yards per carry in helping Towson rebound from a 1-10 season to finish 9-3 and win the CAA championship. West is a candidate for the Jerry Rice Award, which will be presented to the top freshman in NCAA FCS on Jan. 6.
Navy: Navy senior offensive guard John Dowd, senior defensive end Jabaree Tuani and junior linebacker Matt Warrick were named to the Football Bowl Subdivision First-Team All-Independent Team by the nationwide media panel responsible for the FBS Independent Player of the Week awards. Midshipmen senior quarterback Kriss Proctor, senior fullback Alexander Teich, senior center Brady DeMell, senior tackle Ryan Basford, junior outside linebacker-safety Tra'ves Bush, junior cornerback David Sperry and freshman safety Chris Ferguson received honorable mention.
Also: Johns Hopkins is ranked 19th in the final American Football Coaches Association poll of the season and 18th in the last d3football.com poll. … Virginia University of Lynchburg player Shean Cain of Baltimore was named a United States Collegiate Athletic Association Academic All-American.

Suter named ECAC D-III South Player of the Year
Johns Hopkins senior midfielder Erica Suter (River Hill) was named the ECAC Division III South women's soccer Player of the Year. The first team also includes Hopkins freshman forward Hannah Kronick, Hopkins senior defender Jessica Hnatiuk (John Carroll) and Frostburg State junior defender Erin Proctor. Frostburg sophomore forward Adria Graham, Stevenson junior defender Taylor Zimmerman (John Carroll), Salisbury senior defender Amanda Zyzak and Salisbury freshman goalkeeper Michelle Conrad made the second team.
More women's soccer: UMBC was honored with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for maintaining at least a 3.0 team GPA.
Field hockey: Salisbury senior back Tara McGovern was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic first team, while senior back Shannon Hanratty (Broadneck) and senior goalkeeper Anna Cooke were each named to the second team.
Baseball: Right-handed pitcher Alex Welch (Digital Harbor) joined the 2012 recruiting class at UMES.
Salisbury: The Sea Gulls, who won four Capital Athletic Conference championships during the fall season, are ranked fifth overall in the 2011-12 Learfield Sports Division III Directors Cup standings. Through the fall sports season, Salisbury compiled 240 points, trailing only Washington (Mo.) with 372 points, Middlebury (359), Amherst (264) and Calvin (262).

Ex-Orioles prospect Ochoa to coach for Red Sox
Former Orioles minor league outfielder Alex Ochoa, 39, was named first base coach of the Boston Red Sox. Ochoa, who was traded by the Orioles to the New York Mets in the deal that brought Bobby Bonilla to Camden Yards in 1995, was the hitting coach for Boston's Single-A Salem affiliate last season, guiding a team that led the Carolina League in on-base percentage (.328).

D.C. United: Goalkeeper Bill Hamid has been called up to the U.S. men's national team for two friendly matches in January. Hamid will join the U.S. Soccer Federation from Jan. 3 to Jan. 26. The team will face Venezuela in Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 21 and Panama in Panama City on Jan. 25.
