Sam Pagano tried to talk his oldest son out of coaching. By the time his younger boy was ready to choose a profession, it was no use.

“It was destined,” Sam said.

It wasn’t that Sam Pagano’s life had not been fuller because of his decades spent molding young men and instructing them in the game he loved. His reluctance had to do with him knowing the demands of being a football coach and that such a job didn’t always work out as it had for him, an entire career spent raising his family in one town.

“I’m not a mover,” Sam Pagano said this week, recalling how he pushed his eldest, Chuck, toward a business degree.

Chuck did get that degree, as did younger son, John.

But both boys also became football coaches.
