Terps' Vellano, Monroe earn All-America honors

Maryland junior defensive lineman Joe Vellano was voted a second-team All-American by the Associated Press on Wednesday, and defensive lineman Andre Monroe has been chosen a second-team freshman All-American by Phil Steele Publications and Yahoo! Sports. Vellano leads the Football Bowl Subdivision in tackles by a defensive lineman (7.8 per game). Monroe ranks second in the FBS in sacks among freshmen (0.56 per game) and leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in tackles for loss (0.83 per game) by a freshman.

Morgan State: Tight end Lamont Bryant and defensive end Zary Stewart are scheduled to play third annual HBCU All-Star Bowl at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The game will include players from historically black colleges and universities from Divisions I and II levels. There are 43 players who were selected to play from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Bayhawks draft 18 players; Meade to coach U.S. team

The Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse strengthened their defense with league veteran John Orsen as their first pick in the supplemental draft. The Bayhawks acquired 18 players in the draft, including rookie midfielder Kevin Kaminski (third round, 21st overall); defenseman Bill Henderson, fourth round, 29th overall); rookie midfielder Chris Hunt (fifth round, 37th overall), the brother of Bayhawks midfielder Ben Hunt; attackman Brendan Cannon (sixth round, 45th overall); goalie Joey Kemp (seventh round, 53rd overall); midfielder Scott LaRue (Maryland, eighth round, 61st overall); midfielder Al Kohart (ninth round, 69th overall); rookie attackman Trevor Moore (10th round, 77th overall); defensemen Tim Kaiser (11th round, 85th overall); midfielder Walter Flaherty (12th round, 93rd overall); defenseman Michael Simon (13th round, 101st overall); midfielder Brian Clayton (14th round, 109th overall); faceoff specialist and former Bayhawk Pat Muston (UMBC, 15th round, 117th overall); rookie goalie Anthony DiBartolo III (Mount St. Mary's, 16th round, 125th overall); attackman Neal Hicks (17th round, 133rd overall) and midfielder Albert Maione (18th round, 141st overall). The Bayhawks also added rookie attackman Zack Howell from the player pool.

More lacrosse: US Lacrosse named former Navy coach Richie Meade head coach of the 2014 U.S. men's national senior team. Meade will lead Team USA in its title defense at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship, held in Denver on July 10-19, 2014. Meade coached the Midshipmen from 1994 to 2011.

Women's college basketball: Kendall Hackney scored a career-high 29 points and host Northwestern (8-1) shot a season-best 51 percent to win, 87-74, over Morgan State (2-4) on Wednesday. Chyress Lockhart had 12 points for the Bears, who scored 37 points in each half.

Men's college basketball: Baltimore City Community College will host the annual Ben Williams Basketball Classic from Friday to Sunday. The tournament will feature six teams, including the host Panthers. The other participants include Community College of Beaver County (Pa.), CCBC-Catonsville, CCBC-Dundalk, Jamestown (N.Y.) Community College and Potomac State College (W.Va.). The games are at 4 p.m., 6p.m. and 8p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon, 2p.m. and 4p.m. Sunday. The Panthers (6-3) play Potomac State at 4p.m. Friday, Jamestown CC at 8 p.m. Saturday and Beaver County CC at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 per day or free for BCCC students, faculty and staff with a valid ID.

College swimming and diving: Navy senior Mac Anthony was named Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week, while Mids junior Laura Gorinski was honored as the Female Swimmer of the Week. Navy senior Courtney Vandament earned the Female Diver of the Week award.
