Nearly every time it seemed St. Frances might pull away from Mount St. Joseph on Friday night, Kameron Williams had an answer.
The junior shooting guard kept the Gaels -- who trailed by 10 at the half -- in the game, most notably during his 10-point outburst in the third quarter that included two 3-pointers and a dunk off a lob from sophomore Phil Booth. It was a methodical scoring performance for Williams, who finished with a team-high 28 points in leading Mount St. Joseph to a 78-76 overtime win over the Panthers.
"We don't get nervous," Williams said. "We don't lose our heads because we know what this team is all about and we know what we're capable of."
Williams, a standout on the AAU circuit with Nike Baltimore Elite, said he has offers from Dayton, Miami, Richmond, Virginia and VCU. The junior said Maryland is "real close" to offering him a scholarship.
"I'm really hoping that they offer," Williams said. "I really watched Juan Dixon, I really watched [Mount St. Joseph graduate] Dino [Gregory] when he was there and I really want to be a part of that."
Other recruiting notes
* Lavon Long sealed the win for Mount St. Joseph by blocking St. Frances wing Tevon Saddler's shot as time expired. The junior scored 14 points and was a physical presence down low – especially late in the game – for the Gaels.
Long said he's hearing mostly from Dayton, Towson and Virginia Tech. Tigers assistant Kenny Johnson and Hokies assistant Rob Ehsan were both on hand to witness the 6-foot-5 forward's performance.
* Maurice White paced the Panthers with a game-high 31 points. The 6-foot-2 guard has emerged as St. Frances' top scorer – a role he said he never envisioned for himself.
White spent time with three AAU teams this summer – Nike Baltimore Elite, Under Armour B'more's Finest and Crusader Nation. He claims an offer from Elon and hopes his junior season leads to many more scholarships.
