Blast beats Lancers for 5th win in row

The Blast won its fifth straight Major Indoor Soccer League game and improved to 5-1 with a 10-4 win over the Rochester Lancers on Saturday night. Defender Mike Lookingland led the way with two goals and an assist in the team's fifth consecutive road win. Stephen DeRoux and Adriano Dos Santos scored 49 seconds apart in the first quarter to give the Blast a 4-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for both players. Lookingland scored in the 10th minute to put the Blast on top 6-0. After nearly 12 minutes of back-and-forth play in the second quarter, Rochester's Josiah Snelgrove was called for a two-minute tripping penalty but Baltimore's league-leading power-play unit was unable to convert, and instead gave up a short-handed goal to Gary Boughton to cut the Blast lead to 6-2. The Blast wasted no time stifling the Lancers' momentum, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 10-2. Lookingland scored his second goal of the night at 1:02 then assisted Machel Millwood at 4:19. Rochester veteran Doug Miller cut Baltimore's lead to 10-4 with a goal at 7:39. The Blast will return to 1st Mariner Arena next weekend to host the Missouri Comets on Friday and Syracuse Silver Knights on Saturday. Friday is Purple Pride night as the Blast will be joined by Ravens rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith (Maryland), who will host a "Throw to the Pro" event at halftime.

Eighttofasttocatch wires field in Jennings Handicap

Eighttofasttocatch led from start to finish in the $75,000 Jennings Handicap on Saturday at Laurel Park. First away from the gate under Sheldon Russell, the 5-year-old son of Not For Love opened up on his five rivals through the turn, where Russell gave him a breather until the pack began to close in. Then, with just a little urging, Eighttofasttocatch ran to a 41/4-length victory in 1 minute, 35.76 seconds for the mile distance. Indian Dance finished second, and Concealed Identity took third. Tim Keefe trains Eighttofasttocatch, who has won five starts this year, including the Harrison Johnson Memorial, the Japan Racing Association Stakes and the Maryland Million Classic. "Tim and I had spoken about it, and it looked on paper he was the fastest horse, even under rating, so as soon as the gates open, I just took one hold and got him to relax as much as I could. He enjoyed it," Russell said. "I was making sure that when I was on the lead I didn't have anybody surprise me, so when I felt them coming close behind me I just made sure I had my horse's attention, and at the top of the lane, he gave me everything he had." Said Keefe: "We were hoping for a good effort today. The intention was to get him to relax and settle and he has. With no speed in here we thought more than likely we'd be in front. He was able to go slow enough and rate on the front end." Eigthttofasttocatch paid $3.80. Keefe and Russell completed the late daily double when Nightswimming ($3.40) captured the final race of the afternoon.
