The Mount de Sales field hockey team got good news Friday when the school announced it will be getting a turf field. No more rough, pitted ground and ball-slowing grass to play on.
"It will be a catalyst for us," Mount de Sales coach Mary Gentner said. "We did all that we did last season with grass. Imagine how much more we will be able to do with the turf field to practice and play on."
Mount de Sales won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference title this season with a 16-4-1 record, and along the way beat back-to-back public school Class 3A champion Westminster, IAAM A Conference runner-up McDonogh among other A Conference and public school teams.
The Mount de Sales team had 14 shutouts, with sophomore goalie Eve Lukowski leading the way with 150 saves and junior midfielder Julianna Shearer scoring 17 goals -- the most by any IAAM player in any of the three conferences.
Gentner said she can't wait for next season.
"We played those out of conference teams so people would take notice," the coach said. "It was a dream season. But I think we're going to be stronger next year. I've scheduled all the strong teams we played this year and scheduled more A-conference teams. It's such a joy to coach."
