Loyola women, men picked for 2nd, 3rd in MAAC in basketball
The Loyola men's and women's basketball teams have drawn their highest combined rankings since the school joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 1989-90 in the league's preseason rankings. The women's team, which tied a school record with 21 wins and reached the WNIT second round last year, was picked to finish second this season, and the men were selected to finish third. Both teams had two players selected to the Preseason All-MAAC teams. Junior guard Katie Sheahin and senior guard Miriam McKenzie (Oakland Mills) made the women's first team, and senior forward Shane Walker and junior forward Erik Etherly were named to the men's second team.
More men's basketball: Baltimore City Community College is ranked 12th in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II preseason poll. It's the first time in coach Terry Maczko's six-year tenure the Panthers have been ranked in the preseason. Cecil College is No. 13.
Football: Navy senior guard John Dowd, who has a 3.91 GPA in mechanical engineering, is one of 16 players named to the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Class and is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the best scholar-athlete in the nation. Each finalist will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. Dowd is Navy's eighth NFF National Scholar-Athlete and first since 1999. … Frostburg State senior quarterback Josh Volpe was selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Offensive Co-Player of the Week.
Men's soccer: UMBC (4-2-0, 7-6-3) lost its grip on first place in the America East Conference as visiting Stony Brook (4-1-1, 8-5-3) took advantage of early defensive miscues and defeated the host Retrievers, 3-0. UMBC lost its third consecutive game and slipped behind the Seawolves and first-place Boston University (5-1-0, 9-7-0). … Anthony Okodua and Quinn Meehan scored to help host Towson (2-10-2, 1-7-1 Colonial Athletic Association) earn a 2-2 tie with Delaware (10-3-2, 5-3-1). … Navy junior forward David Jackson was chosen as Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week.
Women's soccer: UMBC junior forward Rachel McKee (Mount Hebron) was selected to the All-America East second team. She led the Retrievers with seven goals and 14 points this season, the most by a UMBC player since 2005. … Navy freshman forward Morgan Dankanich was named the ECAC Division I Offensive Player of the Week. … Sophomore Pamela Vranis had a hat trick and Johns Hopkins (16-0, 9-0), ranked fourth in Division III, tied its highest goal total of the season in an 8-0 rout of Centennial Conference opponent McDaniel (2-13, 1-8). … Stevenson senior forward Stephanie Eyler was named Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and Mustangs senior goalie Brittany Ross (Severna Park) was selected as CAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Field hockey: Freshman Katie Gerzabek scored her first career hat trick and added an assist as No. 3 Maryland (14-3) rolled to a 6-2 victory over visiting Drexel. … McDaniel junior Paige Messersmith (Dulaney) was named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Women's volleyball: Towson junior setter Aubrey Kirven was named CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman defensive specialist Paige Sekerak was picked as CAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Reisterstown's Robinson earns Betz Addie honor
Jada Robinson, 12, of Reisterstown has been awarded the first Pauline Betz Addie Scholarship. Robinson is No. 18 in the United States Tennis Association 12-and-under national rankings and has a 4.0 GPA. The announcement was made by the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, where Robinson trains. The scholarship provides Robinson with up to four hours of tennis training plus an hour of fitness training weekdays at JTCC, a USTA Regional Training Center. The scholarship is renewable annually if Robinson maintains her achievement levels on the court and in the classroom. Robinson is ranked No. 1 in the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section in the 12-and-under age division and No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Section in the 14-and-under age division.
Swimming: The Michael Phelps Swim School announced its first out-of-state licensee, affiliating with New York-based Velocity Aquatics to bring the Baltimore-based Olympic star's swimming instruction to Buffalo and Rochester. Velocity Aquatics, operating as the Michael Phelps Swim School-NY, will begin programming this month at Velocity Aquatics partner facility Rochester Athletic Club-Perinton, and through its USA Club affiliate — The Sea Dragons — at East Rochester High. It will also begin offering classes in Buffalo at Casey Middle School in November. Michael Phelps Swim School is a learn-to-swim program for all ages and abilities; it offers swim classes, including personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, personal growth and rescue skills.
Golf: The team of Rick Schuller, PGA director of instruction at Swader's Sports Park, and Frank Ferguson, PGA assistant professional at Washington Golf and Country Club, came from one shot back after the first day to win the Middle Atlantic PGA Team Championship by two shots over Faber Jamerson, PGA general manager at Falling River CC, and Eric Cobb, PGA head professional at Ingleside Resort. The tournament was held at Wintergreen (Va.) Resort's Stoney Creek Course.
Equestrian: Scott Stewart of Flemington, N.J., rode Garfield to the grand hunter championship at the Washington International Horse Show. Stewart was also named the leading hunter rider after he won four tricolor ribbons. Becky Gochman of New York swept the amateur-owner over-35 hunter division and picked up the grand amateur-owner championship with Sambalino. Gochman was also named the leading amateur-owner rider.
