St. John's-Catholic forfeits to AACS
Annapolis Area Christian School's football team was scheduled to play its homecoming game tonight against St. John's-Catholic Prep, but the Frederick team has suffered so many injuries in recent weeks that it cannot safely field a team this week and has forfeited the game to AACS. Both schools are small and don't have huge football rosters, so Annapolis Area athletic director Jim Domoracki said he understands the situation. "You have to keep safety first," Domoracki said. "We've played them in all sports in many seasons, and it's just one of those crazy situations." They feel terrible about it, but we understand. You have to make the best of a tough situation. It could very easily happen to us." Homecoming, however, will go on. The game and its surrounding festivities were scheduled to be held at Arundel's turf field. Now, the field hockey game between the Eagles and Pallotti will serve as the homecoming centerpiece. It will be played in place of the football game tonight at 7 at Arundel. With the forfeit, the Eagles improve to 4-1 overall and remain 2-0 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference. St. John's is in the C Conference.

O's-Red Sox finale ESPN's biggest Wed. draw since '98
The Orioles' comeback victory Wednesday over the Boston Red Sox on the final night of the regular season was the most watched Wednesday night baseball game on ESPN since 1998. The telecast, which was not shown in the teams' local markets, averaged a 1.6 rating and had 2.117 million viewers.
Women's college soccer: Senior All-American Jasmyne Spencer scored the game-winning goal for No. 11 Maryland (8-2-3, 2-2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) in a 2-1 victory at Clemson (5-6-0, 0-4-0) on Thursday night. The Terps got on the board in the second minute when junior Danielle Hubka connected on a shot from 25 yards out. … Junior forward Rachel McKee (Mount Hebron) gave UMBC (0-10-1, 0-2-0 America East) an early lead, but host Stony Brook (3-8-0, 1-1-0) scored four unanswered goals in a 4-1 win. … Johns Hopkins freshman Hannah Kronick was named Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
Men's college lacrosse: Defenseman Chris Clements (St. Paul's) and attackman Steele Stanwick (Loyola) will be among Virginia's four team captains for the 2012 season.
Capitals: The team has re-signed left wing Jason Chimera to a two-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Chimera, 32, recorded 10 goals, 16 assists, 26 points and 64 penalty minutes in 81 games with the Capitals last season.
D.C. United: Goalkeeper Bill Hamid has been called up to the U.S. men's national team for its weeklong camp beginning Monday. United's Dwayne De Rosario has been named to the Canadian Soccer Association 19-man roster and will join the Canadian team before its match Oct. 7 against St. Lucia in Gros Islet in the CONCACAF Round 2 matches of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying.
Golf: Gary B. Carpenter and son Gary Jr. of Crofton captured their second consecutive Father and Son Golf Classic Championship, beating a field of more than 500 teams the last week of July in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the victory comes the invitation to return to Spain to defend their European title.
Sailing: In the Santa Maria Cup women's match racing championship in Annapolis, standings at the end of the round-robin racing, heading into the quarterfinals, were: Julie Bossard (France), Anna Tunnicliffe (USA), Becca Dellenbaugh (USA), Silja Lehtinen (Finland), Sharon Ferris-Choat (Canada), Elizabeth Baylis (USA), Martina Silva (Argentina), and Maegan Ruhlman (USA).
