No. 9 Terps play to 0-0 tie with N.C. State

The No. 9 Maryland women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against visiting North Carolina State on Sunday afternoon. Maryland (7-2-3, 1-2-1 ACC) finished with a 17-15 shot advantage over the Wolfpack (8-3-1, 0-2-1) and an 11-2 lead in corner kicks. The Terps are 1-2-2 in their past five games. "We're in the midst of a stretch in which we have not been in during the last two seasons," Maryland coach Brian Pensky said. "And with that, we're being tested in terms of our fortitude and our ability to bounce back from tough results."

More results: Sophomore Sam Newhaller scored in the 16th minute as Navy (7-3-2) defeated visiting Francis Marion (3-8-1), 1-0. Navy is now 6-1-1 in its last eight games and ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll. … UMBC sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet matched her career high with 11 saves, but UMBC (0-9-1, 0-1-0) fell to Hartford, 3-0, in the America East Conference opener for both teams. Hartford (8-0-2, 1-0-0) scored in the 16th minute when forward Mary Beth Hamilton lofted a shot from 25 yards out that found the upper-right corner of the net, then added a pair of goals in the second half. … Ragan Cote and Kelly Baker scored first-half goals to lead Mount St. Mary's (2-4-1) to a 2-1 win at Iona. Mount keeper Alicia Miller had 10 saves in the game, including four in the second half. The game was a makeup from the Aug. 28 contest that was postponed because of Hurricane Irene.

Young Loyola squad tops St. Peter's in straight sets

The Loyola women's volleyball team played five freshmen in the second and third sets, and the Greyhounds earned a 25-15, 34-32, 25-11 victory at Saint Peter's College in Metro Atlantic Atheltic Conference action. Lauren Arnold made her first college start and responded with 13 kills with only three errors in 25 swings for a .400 hitting percentage. Tina Catanach had a match-high 15 kills and hit a season-best .419. … Ariel Richard had 14 kills and 17 digs, and Janka Schmitt added 11 kills, but Morgan State rallied to defeat host Coppin State, 3-2 (20-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-8), in the Eagles' Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener. … On Saturday, UMES recovered after a 3-2 loss to Campbell (19-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-22, 10-15) to defeat High Point, 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 26-24), and stay at .500 on the season and undefeated on the road. The Hawks moved to 6-6 on the season and 4-0 in road matches.

College football: Navy received two voting points in the latest Associated Press College Football poll. Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Times tabbed Navy 24th. The Mids did not receive any votes in the USA Today/Coaches Poll.

Women's college tennis: Sophomores Lauren Fields and Brooke Pottish brought home a pair of titles for Johns Hopkins at the ITA Southeast Regional on Saturday. Fields won the Blue 1 Singles draw, while Pottish won the Blue 2 Singles draw. The title is the second straight for Pottish, who won the Blue 2A Singles draw last season as a freshman.

Golf: Jake An of Centreville, Va., won the Middle Atlantic Amateur championship Sunday, closing with a 71 for a 72-hole total of 283 and a two-stroke edge on his closest pursuers. Will Collins of Salisbury, N.C., shared second with Steven Delmar Jr. of Olney at 285, and Connor Flach of Ellicott City, a Centennial junior, earned the Junior title with a final-round 73 for 304.
