Stertzer leads No. 1 UM past UMBC in OT, 4-3
Senior Casey Townsend tallied three goals and John Stertzer headed home the winner in overtime to lead No. 1 Maryland past UMBC, 4-3, in front of a record crowd at Retriever Soccer Park on Tuesday. Stertzer, after missing a possible game-winning penalty kick with 30 seconds left in the first overtime, received a cross from Taylor Kemp and headed home the winner from five yards out in the 104th minute for the Terps (6-0-0). UMBC fell to 2-1-2.

Seven to be inducted into Md. Athletic Hall
Seven athletes who excelled in their sports at the highest level will be honored Nov. 10 by the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame at Michael's 8thAvenue in Glen Burnie. The honorees are: former 22-year NFL punter Sean Landeta (Loch Raven); former NBA All-Star Sam Cassell (Dunbar); 13-year major league pitcher Geoff Zahn, a Baltimore native; former world heavyweight boxing champion Hasim Rahman, a Baltimore native; PGA golfer Fred Funk (Maryland); XGames gold medalist Travis Pastrana, an Annapolis native; and former three-time All-American and Olympian women's basketball player Tara Heiss (Maryland). It will be the organization's 52nd induction ceremony; the last was held in 2007.
Recruiting: No. 1 Gilman might have lost its showdown against Good Counsel at the Patriot Classic on Saturday night, but the Greyhounds have already reaped benefits from that high-profile game. Maryland football coach Randy Edsall attended the matchup between the top two teams in the state, and on Monday he offered scholarships to Gilman junior quarterback Shane Cockerille and sophomore defensive end-wide receiver Melvin Keihn. Women's college basketball: Home-and-home matchups with 2011 postseason teams Duke, North Carolina, Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia highlight the 2011-12 Maryland women's basketball schedule. The Terrapins will play at least 17 games against opponents that competed in either the NCAA or WNIT postseason tournament last season. Ten of those games will be played in College Park. Highlighting the nonconference schedule will be a matchup with Georgetown, which ended the 2010-11 season ranked 14th, on Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. at Comcast Center. Six local opponents are on the Terps' nonconference slate. Maryland will welcome Loyola, Georgetown and Towson to Comcast Center, and will travel to UMBC, American and George Mason. In the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Maryland will host Michigan 7 p.m. Nov. 30 in the schools' first meeting.
Local golf: Stacey Collins birdied the 17th and 18th holes and she and partner Sally Ratcliffe won the annual Maryland State Two-Woman team tournament at Manor Country Club with a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday. … Medalist Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville posted two wins (4 and 3, 5 and 3) to reach the quarterfinals at the U.S. Senior Women's championship in Ooltewah, Tenn. She demolished Kim Cure of Iowa Park, Texas, 8 and 7, on Monday. … The two remaining area players lost in the second round of the U.S. Senior Amateur at Manakin Sabot, Va., when Congressional Country Club members Jack Vardaman and Pat Tallent fell before Philip Pleat of Nashua, N.H., 5 and 4, and Louis Lee of Heber Springs, Ark., 1 up, respectively. Michael Weiner (1 down) of Hayfields Country Club and Marty West (19 holes) of Columbia CC lost in the first round of match play Monday.
