Witmer leads No. 3 UM past Villanova, 6-3
The No. 3 Maryland field hockey team (5-1) held off visiting Villanova, 6-3, on Sunday as sophomore Jill Witmer led the Terrapins' attack in the second half with her first career hat trick to break open a halftime tie. Senior Jemma Buckley had a first-half goal, and junior transfer Nikki Fernandez scored her first goal as a Terrapin.

Hunter's goal gives Mids title at Navy Invitational
Freshman midfielder Rachel Hunter scored in the 95th minute to give the Navy women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Davidson (2-4-1) and the Navy Invitational title. Hunter's strike gave Navy (5-2-1) its second "golden goal" victory of the season. Hunter was named the Navy Invitational's Most Valuable Player, and sophomore Sam Newhaller and senior team captain Kate Herren joined Hunter on the All-Tournament Team.
More Division I women: Junior forward Cheyenne Skidmore (Liberty) recorded the first multigoal game of her career by scoring two goals and added an assist as Towson (4-2-0) earned its second straight win, a 5-0 non-conference victory over visiting Mount St. Mary's (1-3-0). The Tigers' leading scorer with five goals and two assists, Skidmore scored a goal in each half as the Tigers (4-2-0) tallied their highest single-game scoring output since a 5-0 victory over Longwood on Sept. 7, 2007. … Sophomore keeper Didi Haracic made a career high 12 saves, but Loyola lost, 3-0, to host No. 25 Virginia Tech (7-1-0) in the final game of the Hokie Invitational. Haracic, along with Joie McLaughlin and Gigi Mangione (McDonogh) were each named to the All-Tournament Team for the Greyhounds (1-7-0).
Division I men: Iona scored in the 97th rally past Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, at the Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic. Ian Hendrie (St. Andrew's Episcopal) had two goals and an assist for the Mountaineers (1-3-1). … The game between host Towson and Saint Joseph's scheduled for Sunday was postponed because of inclement weather.
Division II women: Johns Hopkins senior midfielder Erica Suter (River Hill) scored a pair of first-half goals to lead the eighth-ranked Blue Jays to a 2-0 victory over Arcadia (3-1) on the second day of the Drew University Fall Fest. The Blue Jays, who claimed the tournament title with the win, improve to 4-0. Suter's two goals and four points improve her career point total to 105, which ties her with former Blue Jays standout Sarah Parola for first place on Johns Hopkins' career scoring list. She also improved her career goal total to 43 — just three shy of Parola's career mark of 46. Suter is already Hopkins' career leader in assists with 19.

Milford Mill forward Miles chooses St. Joseph's
Isaiah Miles, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward from Milford Mill, has committed to St. Joseph's. He took an official visit to the Atlantic 10 school last weekend. "It was great," Miles said. "Everyone there, the whole community, people who don't play basketball, they all welcomed me in with open arms. Teammates treat me as if I'm already on the team." Miles, a 2010 Baltimore Sun first-team All-Metro selection, was also recruited by Drexel, La Salle, Loyola, North Carolina State, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, South Florida, Towson and Western Kentucky.
Triathlon: Kathleen Hursey, 22, of Hampstead finished in first place among Elite women with a time of 1 hour, 44 minutes, 52 seconds at the sixth annual Nation's Triathlon in Washington. Competitors from across the nation, including active-duty service members and first responders, joined a field of more than 4,500 athletes who competed in the International distance triathlon event. First among the Elite males was Danilo Palmucci, 48, of Rome with a time of 1:33:06.
Golf: Medalist Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville shot 68-71—139 and Andrea Kraus of Pikesville returned 77-77—154 as both qualified for match play at the U.S. Senior Women's championship on the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. The other state entrant, Carol Davies of Garrett Park, failed to advance after posting 87-86—173. … At the U.S. Seniors championship at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin Sabot, Va., all four Maryland-area players qualified for match play — Pat Tallent (75-71—146) and Jack Vardaman (73-74—147), from Congressional Country Club in Bethesda were joined by Marty West of Rockville (73-75—148) and Michael Weiner of Hayfields CC (74-78—150).
College softball: UMBC seniors Ashley Carver, Katie Ferguson of North East and Angela Yannone (Chesapeake) will serve as team captains.
Minor league basketball: The Bay Area Shuckers signed former Arundel and Anne Arundel Community College player Joey Hutchins Jr. as well as Kevin Green (Patterson) and Terry Hosley (Parkville, CCBC-Essex), both former area prep standouts and leaders of Baltimore's Maryland Bible College team.
D.C. United: The club signed midfielder Stephen King to a new contract.
