Towson QB Enders receives CAA honor
Towson sophomore quarterback Grant Enders (Old Mill) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. A transfer from Lackawanna College, where he played last season, Enders made his first start for the Tigers in their season opener against Morgan State on Saturday night, completing 15 of 19 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-3 win over the Bears. He also ran for 47 yards on six carries and scored a touchdown. Enders is the first Tiger to be named CAA Offensive Player of the Week since Sean Schaefer earned the award in October 2007. "Grant managed the game plan and his offense extremely well last night," Towson coach Rob Ambrose said. "It is a great testament to our entire offense that Grant was able to perform so well. This honor speaks well of both Grant and his teammates."
More Division I honors: Navy quarterback Kriss Proctor and Navy placekicker Jon Teague were named FBS Independent Players of the Week. Proctor shared the inaugural weekly award on offense, while Teague was cited on special teams.
Division II honor: Dajuan Smith (Edmondson) was chosen as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Offensive Lineman of the Week. Smith was the key hub in Bowie State's offensive line, helping the Bulldogs accumulate 344 yards in total offense in a 28-7 win over Assumption on Saturday.
Division III: Frostburg senior running back Patrick Pinchinat was named the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman teammate Zach Tuckmantel was tabbed as the league's Special Teams Player of the Week. … Johns Hopkins quarterback Hewitt Tomlin was named the Centennial Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 297 yards and six touchdowns in Saturday's 45-14 win at Merchant Marine.

Rook earns riding crown on final day of Md. State Fair
Apprentice jockey Sarah Rook, who was the talk of the racetrack over the final weekend of action, captured her first riding title with nine wins at Timonium Race Course on closing day of the six-day meeting at the Maryland State Fair on Monday, edging last year's champion, J.D. Acosta, who had eight. Dane Kobiskie and Dale Capuano shared the trainers title after saddling four winners each. Kobiskie took the top share of Timonium's $10,000 trainers bonus, outpointing all others in number of starters and in-the-money finishes. Live racing in Maryland moves to Laurel Park on Friday. Laurel Park, which is celebrating its 100th year, presents the Jim McKay Maryland Million on Oct. 1.

Sitz sends St. Mary's past Randolph-Macon, 1-0
Junior midfielder Liza Sitz found the back of the net with 2:09 left in regulation to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a 1-0 nonconference victory over Randolph-Macon. Sitz picked up her second goal of the season at 87:51 when she struck the ball from just outside the box over the reach of first-year goalkeeper Briana Housekeeper. Sophomore Kelsey Wirtz (Hereford) recorded her second shutout of the season with seven total saves.
College field hockey: A pair of goals in the first 5:26 of the second half lifted McDaniel to a 2-0 nonconference victory at host Washington and Lee in the season opener. Freshman Natalie Price scored her first collegiate goal and Katie Jones (Winters Mill) added an insurance tally, lifting the Green Terror to a win in its opener for the first time since 2007. Stephanie Thomson (Chesapeake) made six saves for the shutout.
Men's college golf: Sophomore Kevin Ellison finished 30th to lead Mount St. Mary's to an 11th-place finish at the Turning Stone Intercollegiate, the Mount's first event of the season. Ellison posted rounds of 75, 73 and 78 to card a 226 in the three rounds to place 30th, 18 strokes behind the medalist. Rounding out the Mount's five competitors were Tonny Aizpun, 32nd place, 227; Ryan Triller (North Harford), 36th place, 228; Dan Michalek (Mount St. Joseph), 53rd place, 234; and Andrew Lawton (Mount St. Joseph), 62nd place, 239.
Women's college volleyball: UMES freshman outside hitter Saitaua Iosia was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week
