Hutsell wins PGA Pro National in playoff
David Hutsell of Baltimore birdied the second playoff hole Wednesday from 6 feet to capture the PGA Professional National Championship over Faber Jamerson and Scott Erdmann on the East Course at Hershey (Pa.) Country Club. Trailing Erdmann by four shots heading into the final round, Hutsell, director of instruction at The Elkridge Club, gained ground quickly with birdies on one and five, and continued his charge with an eagle on six. His birdie on the 17th in regulation and his two-putt par from 50 feet on the last hole enabled him to reach the playoff. Hutsell's closing 68, his fourth straight subpar round, was the day's second-best score. "Playing in this tournament is certainly nerve-wracking," he said. "The golf course set up well for me all week, and I made a lot of putts. It is quite an honor." Hutsell, 40, who played baseball at UMBC and Towson, earned the $75,000 first-place check and a spot in the 2011 PGA Championship, the 2011 PGA Cup and six PGA Tour events over a 12-month period.

Terps land Linganore football player Riddle
Linganore's Joe Riddle isn't sure what position he'll play in college, and he doesn't care. The only thing that mattered to Riddle was playing college football at Maryland. On Sunday, the rising senior from Frederick County accomplished that goal by landing a scholarship offer and committing to the Terps. "It's a great feeling, great news," Riddle said. "This is what I wanted — to get an offer from Maryland. I wanted to go to school there since I was a little kid." Riddle, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound running back for the Lancers, also had scholarship offers from Buffalo, Cincinnati, New Hampshire, Towson and Virginia Military Institute.
