Terps to play West Virginia, Virginia Tech in Baltimore

Maryland has agreed to play two more football contests at M&T Bank Stadium, the school announced Wednesday. The Terrapins will face West Virginia on Sept. 21, 2013, and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech in 2014 at the 71,008-seat stadium. The date for the Virginia Tech game will be determined when the ACC releases its schedule in early 2014. Maryland played Navy in Baltimore in 2005 as well as in the 2010 season opener. Both games were played before near-capacity crowds (67,809 in 2005, 69,348 in 2010). "We are committed to providing the best experience possible for everyone involved with Maryland football — student-athletes, coaches, fans and alumni," Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said. "We've been successful in our recent games in Baltimore in every aspect. The feedback from our players and fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Since our arrivals, [coach] Randy Edsall and I have traveled throughout Maryland. In those travels, it's become clear that since our university represents the entire state, we must have a strong presence everywhere, particularly in Baltimore."

Atholton's Lombardozzi called up to Nats' Triple-A affiliate

The Nationals promoted infielder Stephen Lombardozzi from Class AA Harrisburg to Class AAA Syracuse, which sets up Lombardozzi for a possible call-up in September. At Harrisburg, Lombardozzi, who grew up in Columbia and graduated from Atholton, hit .309 with four homers. Just about every Nationals evaluator I've spoken with thinks Lombardozzi will be a big leaguer, and director of player development Doug Harris has compared him to Jamey Carroll — as steady as can be with an advanced approach at the plate. He played in the Arizona Fall League last year, a sign of how highly the Nationals think about him.

Harness racing: Tough Challenger, backed down to the prohibitive betting favorite at 1-5, driven by James Morand and trained by Les Givens, broke the track record for aged trotters at Ocean Downs, finishing in 1 minute, 57.2 seconds. Doggone Yankee held the previous record of 1:58.1, set in 2006. The 4-year-old horse by You Betcha also owns the track record at Delaware's Harrington Raceway. Racing resumes tonight at 7.

Varsity baseball: Team Maryland, a group of high school all-star players, defeated Canada, 12-4, in Norman, Okla. Team Maryland is competing against seven other teams from around the country and Canada in the Heartland Classic. Through four games, the Maryland squad is 2-2. Maryland lost to Oklahoma, 12-4, in the opener and followed that with an 8-0 victory over Arizona. Maryland then lost to Arkansas, 15-7. Maryland's game against Texas today at 1p.m. will be broadcast at http://zpreps.com.

Varsity tennis: James G. Busick Jr. is retiring after 29 years as Gilman coach. Steve Krulevitz, a former professional player and four-time MSA champion, will take over after serving as an assistant under Busick the past two seasons. Busick had a career record of 284-60-3, ranking him second all-time in career wins at the school. His teams won 10 Maryland Scholastic Association/Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championships.

Capitals: Defenseman John Carlson was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.
