New Town's Tucker sharp from field in U.S. rout of Venezuela
Jannah Tucker (New Town) had 17 points in 15minutes, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, in helping the United States overwhelm Venezuela, 114-32, on Wednesday and advance to the medal semifinals at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Merida, Mexico. The United States (3-0), Group B's No. 1 seed, will face Group A's No. 2 seed, still undetermined, Friday.

Navy hires former Terp Letts as wrestling assistant coach
Three-time NCAA qualifier and 2011 All-American Mike Letts has joined the Naval Academy wrestling staff. Letts, a 2011 Maryland graduate, was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion at 174 pounds.
Women's soccer: Jonathan Thayil, a former head coach at Villa Julie (now Stevenson) and Hood, was named coach at Shepherd, where he will continue to coach the men.
Football: Morgan State junior linebacker Allen Stephens was named to the preseason watch list for the Football Championship Subdivision Linebacker of the Year Award given by the College Football Performance Awards.
Conditioning: Frostburg State fitness/strength and conditioning coordinator Glenn Cain has accepted a similar position at Kansas.
Field hockey: Maryland, the 2010 national champion, will host a fundraising golf outing Sept.23 at the University of Maryland Golf Course. For information, go to umterps.com.

Legends Museum to hold scorekeeping program
The Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards will host a "how-to" scorekeeping program with Orioles official scorer Jim Henneman, a former Baltimore Sun sports reporter, on June 25 at 4p.m. "Runs, Hits & Errors — The Life of The Official Scorer" will also feature former scorekeeper Bill Stetka, now the Orioles' director of outreach and development. Bill Stetka. Fans will learn scoring and view official post-game reports, including the one from Cal Ripken Jr.'s record 2,131st consecutive game played. NHL: The Washington Capitals re-signed defenseman Patrick McNeill to a two-year deal. McNeill, 24, has spent the past four seasons with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears.
NFL: The Washington Redskins announced the retirement of area scout Bill Baker. Kyle Smith was named area scout for the Southwest region. Area scout Chip Flanagan was moved to the Southeast region.
Soccer: Tickets are available for the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals doubleheader Sunday at RFK Stadium in Washington. The U.S. men will play Jamaica at 3 p.m., followed by Panama against El Salvador at 6 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the box office and via Ticketmaster. Prices range from $35 to $80.
