Ex-Terps coach Funk qualifies for next week's U.S. Open

Former Maryland golf coach Fred Funk qualified Monday for the U.S. Open, which begins June16 at Bethesda's Congressional Country Club. Funk, a 54-year-old PGA Tour and Champions Tour veteran, shot 67 in the morning and 68 in the afternoon to finish two shots behind sectional winner Kirk Triplett at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville. Funk, who grew up in Prince George's County, has made just one cut on the PGA Tour this year and has just two top-10 finishes on the Champions Tour. "I can't talk right now," he said, his eyes welling up after learning he had qualified. After walking away to compose himself, he added: "It's been such a hard year. That meant a lot to me. To finally play the way I know how, for the first time all year, it meant a lot."

Women's Southern Amateur: Towson University's Airielle Dawson of Parkville lost, 7-6, to 2005 champion Laura Coble of Augusta, Ga., in a championship flight match at Capital City Country Club in Atlanta. Dawson will face Taffy Brower of Boynton Beach, Fla., at 9:06 a.m. today in a consolation-round match.

3 Terps leave program; Towson to play 5 night home games

Junior linebacker Ryan Donohue and junior running back Gary Douglas will leave the Maryland program, Terps coach Randy Edsall announced Tuesday. Senior fullback Haroon Brown's Maryland career is also done. Brown will graduate this summer and not return to the team in the fall. Donohue, a backup linebacker and special terms performer, appeared in 20 games, recording 12 tackles. Douglas, a reserve running back, appeared in 12 games, rushing for 89 yards on 18 carries. Brown played in 29 games at Maryland, including three starts.

Towson: The school announced that it will play five of its six home games at night: 7 p.m. Sept. 3 against Morgan State, 7 p.m. Sept. 10 against Villanova, 7 p.m. Sept. 24 against Colgate, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 against Richmond and 6 p.m. Oct.29 against Delaware. The other home game is noon Nov. 12 against New Hampshire.

Braves draft Frostburg State pitcher Ross in 18th round

Frostburg State pitcher Greg Ross (Loch Raven), a Division III second-team All-American, was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft. Ross was 11-2 with a 1.49 ERA this season.

Jays' Lightner to sit out in fall; ex-Terp Bullett to be honored

Johns Hopkins defenseman Chris Lightner will skip workouts in the fall to heal his ailing back. This past spring, the sophomore successfully transitioned from long-stick midfielder to close defenseman, tying for fourth on the team in caused turnovers and collecting 21 ground balls. Women's college basketball: Former Maryland player Vicky Bullett will be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn. Bullett will be the second Terrapin to be inducted, following former head coach Chris Weller's induction in 2010. A Terp from 1986 to 1989, Bullett averaged 16.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. She's fourth in school history in points with 1,928.
