Nadelen retires after 11 years to focus on new Towson job
New Towson men's lacrosse coach Shawn Nadelen officially ended his playing career Friday, retiring after 11 seasons as a defenseman with the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse. Nadelen, a two-time MLL All Star, was announced as Towson's coach Sunday after spending the past seven years as an assistant for the Tigers. "The time was coming for me to retire," Nadelen said. "I actually considered it after last season, but got the itch again in the spring. I have this great new opportunity to take advantage of. I know it's time for me to move on, and I am very happy about it." Added coach Brendan Kelly: "Shawn Nadelen has been a very important part of the Bayhawks franchise, not only from a talent perspective, but from a character standpoint also. His presence will be missed on and off the field, and we as an organization wish him nothing but the best at Towson." Nadelen, drafted in the inaugural MLL Collegiate Draft as the 15th pick overall, is the only player to have played in all 11 years of the Bayhawks' existence. "It has been a privilege to play for the Bayhawks for their entire existence," Nadelen said. "I never thought it was possible to be part of this great franchise for such a long time." Nadelen's career with the Bayhawks included three league championships (2002, 2005 and 2010), and he holds the franchise record with 95 games played. Nadelen also holds second place in Bayhawks franchise history with 207 ground balls tallied during his career in the MLL. He was also a member of the gold medal-winning Team USA in 2010. "Over the years, the growth the league has undergone has been incredible," Nadelen added. "Starting off in Year One and being the young guy playing with a great group of veterans, and then going and retiring as the longest-tenured Bayhawk is so rewarding. The Bayhawks have always been highly regarded in the MLL, and people like Brendan Kelly and Dave Cottle will help the league to grow that much more. I am excited to see the changes as the league continues to progress, and I am proud to hang my hat on my MLL career with the Bayhawks."
