Johns Hopkins, which was 8-3 in 2010, is ranked 20th in Division III in the Sporting News preseason poll. Senior wide receiver Sam Wernick, who had 69 receptions for 1,265 yards and 17 touchdowns, made the publication's Preseason All-America team.

College wrestling: Rising Navy junior Dan Miller scored back-to-back victories over Virginia's Derek Papagianopoulos to take the 120-kilogram weight class (freestyle) at the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Franklin, Ind., late last month. By winning his weight class, Miller has qualified to represent the United States at the FILA Junior World Championships on July 30-31 in Bucharest, Romania. FILA Juniors are 17 to 20years old.
College baseball: Salisbury senior pitcher Chris Greiner (Mount St. Joseph), who had a 10-4 record, was named a Division III third team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the All-South Region Pitcher of the Year. Greiner also was named first team All-South Region. Teammates Brian Green and Dustin Herbert were named to the second team.
College basketball: George Mason named Mike Wells an assistant coach. He worked most recently as a Washington Wizards assistant coach and advance scout.
NHL: The Washington Capitals acquired left wing Taylor Stefishen from the Nashville Predators for a conditional pick in the 2013 entry draft. Stefishen, 20, spent last season with the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League, finishing with 24 goals and 43 assists.

Golf: Loyola coach Chris Baloga (Calvert Hall, Towson University) is one of 112 players competing Monday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville in a sectional qualifier for a spot in the U.S. Open. Baloga, the reigning Maryland Amateur Player of the Year, shot a 2-under par 70 on May 10 at Lake Presidential Golf Club in Upper Marlboro in a local qualifier to earn a spot in the sectional.
Baseball: The New York Mets optioned left-handed relief pitcher Mike O'Connor, who is 0-1 with a 2.70ERA in nine appearances covering 62/3 innings, to Triple-A Buffalo.
