New Town guard Tucker makes U.S. U-16 team

New Town sophomore guard Jannah Tucker was selected Monday as one of 12 players who will represent the United States at the FIBA Americas U-16 Championship on June 13-18 in Merida, Mexico. The top three teams there will earn a berth into the 2012 FIBA U-17 world championship. Tucker made the team after four days of trials involving 115 players at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Asked in a USA Basketball interview how it felt when she heard her name called as one of the team members, Tucker said: "I was very relieved because I didn't play in the last session. Nothing major, I just hurt my hamstring a little bit, but I definitely wasn't taking anything for granted. I was very excited because it's going to be a great experience." The 6-foot transfer from Western averaged 26.2 points, 12 rebounds, eight steals and six assists for the Titans during the 2010-11 season and has two-year totals of 1,053 points, 341 rebounds, 259 steals, 192 assists.

Navy to face top overall seed Virginia in NCAA opener

Navy, making its ninth appearance in the NCAA tournament, will play top-seeded Virginia on Friday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the Charlottesville Regional. The NCAA announced the 64-team tournament field Monday. The Midshipmen (33-23-1), who will be playing in their first NCAA tournament since 2002, earned an automatic berth by winning the Patriot League title. The Cavaliers (48-9, 22-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) are the tournament's No. 1 overall seed. "We've got some work to do," Navy coach Paul Kostacopoulos said. "We're playing, arguably, the best team in the country." Second seed East Carolina (39-19, 14-10 Conference USA), an at-large selection, will open against third seed St. John's (35-20, 18-18 Big East), also an at-large pick. Tickets are available through the Virginia ticket office and can be ordered by calling 800-542-8821 or online at VirginiaSports.com. The losing teams from Friday will meet in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Saturday; the winners will play at 6 p.m. Saturday. The second elimination game will be contested at 1 p.m. Sunday, with the championship game set for 6 p.m. Sunday. If necessary, a second championship game will be played at 6 p.m. Monday.

Four Terps named to IWLCA All-America first team

Four players from NCAA Division I runner-up Maryland — junior goalkeeper Brittany Dipper, senior midfielder Laura Merrifield, senior attacker Sarah Mollison and sophomore midfielder Katie Schwarzmann (Century) — made the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America first team, which was announced Monday night. The first team also included Loyola senior attacker Grace Gavin (St.Paul's). The full teams are listed below.
