Haushalter hammers Gaithersburg as Severna Park cruises to 4A final

Andre Haushalter started for Severna Park in the Class 4A state semifinal Tuesday night and battled control troubles through his three-plus-inning effort. But he more than made up for it with his bat.

Haushalter went 4-for-5 with five RBIs as the No. 4 Falcons scored 10 runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth to rout Gaithersburg, 19-6, at Maryland.

The game ended after six innings because of the 10-run rule. Severna Park (20-5) advances to Friday's state final against No. 2 Westminster at Ripken Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Westminster (22-0) rolled to an 11-2 victory over Wise in the day's other semifinal at Maryland. The Falcons will try for their second state title in three years; they also won in 2009.

Haushalter, a left-handed hitter, hit a two-run single and an RBI double in the fifth inning as Severna Park sent 14 men to the plate and scored 10 runs on eight hits. The Trojans used four pitchers in that inning alone and six overall in the game.

"I had to step up [on offense]," Haushalter said. "I had to help my team out by getting some hits."

Haushalter came back in the sixth with a two-run double, and the Falcons sent 10 more batters to the plate and score five more runs, with Brent Jones hitting a two-run single.

"This is a great hitting team," Severna Park coach Jim McCandless said. "This is the best hitting team I’ve had in the 12 years I’ve been here."

Severna Park scored four runs in the third before the Trojans answered with six in the fourth. Gaithersburg (17-7) scored those runs thanks to some bunts, walks and hit batters, getting the ball out of the infield just twice.

However, Severna Park catcher Brandon Cavil ended the inning by picking a Gaithersburg runner off third, and that seemed to give the Falcons a jolt. They came back with the 10-run fifth moments later.
