McDonogh senior Alex Sidney entered the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference individual tennis championships Thursday determined not to allow his body to let him down.

After all, Sidney's chance for a title fell short last year when he suffered leg camps and had to retire in the middle of the match against Gilman's Michael Katz.

This time, nothing stopped Sidney — not a head cold, another battle with cramps or the Princeton-bound senior Katz.

Sidney (27-0) cruised past Katz, 6-0, 6-3, on the Eagles' home court to earn his second No. 1 singles title in three years.

"I have never been more motivated in high school for a match," said Sidney, a senior headed to Cornell in the fall.

Gilman senior Alec Hoblitzell topped Mount St. Joseph's Tristan Boustany, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 singles, while Gaels junior Kevin Gates prevailed at No. 3 by beating Gilman's Galen Rende, 6-4, 6-4.

McDonogh seniors Jake Lazer and Tommy Sinnott scored a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) decision over Gilman's Robbie Demuth and Brian Midei in No. 1 doubles.

Gilman's Garrett Duncan and Garrett Weinstein outlasted McDonogh's Clark Buchman and Vibav Mouli, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 2 doubles.
