Severna Park catcher Brandon Cavil often had a rough time during Friday's game against South River, but he erased that with one swing of the bat.
Cavil hit a two-run, two-out single in the seventh inning that gave No. 7 Severna Park an 11-10 victory over visiting South River in an Anne Arundel County game.
Cavil came up with the bases loaded. South River (12-4, 10-2) had taken a 10-9 lead on Nick Sia's RBI double in the top inning, but Severna Park (10-4, 8-4) wouldn't give in.
The Falcons loaded the bases with one out before Scott Mitchell struck out Bradley Keith. Cavil jumped on Mitchell's first pitch to him and lined it into left-center field to score two runs and give the Falcons a dramatic win.
It helped wipe out the memory of a game in which Severna Park pitchers threw five wild pitches — three of which gave the Seahawks runs — and Cavil allowed a passed ball.
"I let all that stuff go," Cavil said. "I knew … all of that would be forgotten if we won the game."
Severna Park had lost to Mitchell earlier this season, but Andre Haushalter's first-inning grand slam gave the Falcons a 5-1 lead.
But Mitchell (3-for-4, homer, three RBIs) led the Seahawks as they scored the next eight runs for a 9-5 lead in the sixth inning. South River scored in every inning — and got help from the five wild pitches and five Severna Park errors.
But the Falcons tied it with four runs in the sixth. Brent Jones led off with a homer to left-center, and that set the tone. Cavil singled with runners on first and second, and the ball got past Sia in right. Then Haushalter hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 9.
That set up the dramatic seventh inning. Severna Park coach Jim McCandless walked over to Cavil during a South River meeting at the mound and gave him some advice.
"I told him this is your chance to win the game," McCandless said.
And that's just what Cavil did.
