Top-ranked Syracuse upset at home by No. 9 Cornell, 11-6
No. 9 Cornell (9-2) handed top-ranked and host Syracuse (9-1) its first loss of the season, 11-6, on Tuesday night in a Central New York showdown. The Big Red took a 6-1 lead in the early moments of the second quarter, then kept a four-goal cushion for all but 1 minute, 21 seconds of the remaining 44:47. Rob Pannell led Cornell with three goals and three assists, but it was the defense that stood out, causing 14 of Syracuse's 20 turnovers and holding its top two offensive threats, Stephen Keogh and JoJo Marasco, to one combined assist. Thomas Keith and Jason Noble caused four turnovers apiece, and Mike Bronzino forced three. The Big Red's first victory over a No. 1 team since 2009 ended a four-game losing streak to the Orange.
Men's Division III games: Neal Barthelme (Dulaney) scored five goals to power visiting Stevenson (14-1, 7-0 Capital Athletic Conference) to a 19-3 victory over York (10-4, 5-2). … Matt Cannone had a hat trick and host Salisbury (14-0, 7-0 CAC) won, 24-5, against Marymount (2-13, 0-7). The Sea Gulls will host Stevenson on Saturday. at 1 p.m. … Dennis Rosson (Severn) had a hat trick and visiting St.Mary's (4-8, 3-4 CAC) won, 10-6, over Welsey (5-10, 2-6). … Kris Miner had two goals and an assist as host Hood (7-6, 3-4 CAC) won, 8-5, over Frostburg State (4-11, 0-7). Dan Dowd scored twice for the Bobcats.
Women's Division I honors: Maryland sophomore midfielder Katie Schwarzmann (Century) was named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week. … Ohio State senior attacker Brittney Zerhusen (Century) was named WomensLax.com Player of the Week and the American Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Women's Division III games: Malory Brunett (River Hill) scored a game-high four goals in a losing effort as visiting Frostburg State (4-11, 3-5 CAC) fell, 15-5, to York (12-3, 5-3). York outscored Frostburg State, 9-2, in the second half. … Marymount (5-8, 2-5 CAC) at St. Mary's (10-5, 4-3) was postponed and rescheduled for 4 p.m. today.

UM basketball guard Tucker joins football team as receiver
Former Maryland basketball guard Cliff Tucker has joined the Terrapins' football team and took part in practice for the first time Tuesday, a spokesman confirmed. The 6-foot-6 senior practiced as a wide receiver. As a high school senior, he had 939 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns and was named the 2007 El Paso (Texas) Gridiron Player of the Year. Last season, Tucker started 16games for the basketball team, averaging 9.6points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Wrestling: Maryland redshirt freshman Danny O'Malley placed second and freshman Jenkins Monzey was eighth at the FILA Junior National Championships last weekend in Cleveland. O'Malley, who qualifies for the FILA World Team Trials in May in Franklin, Ind., had three consecutive victories in the 66 kg Greco Roman bracket before falling, 1-0, 0-2, 3-0, to champion Joseph Locksmith. In the freestyle bracket, Monzey clinched FILA Junior All-America status after topping Mike Rhone, 1-6, 4-0, 3-1.
Softball: Maryland freshman right-hander Ashley Czechner was named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 and giving up no runs in 11 innings.
Men's tennis: Frostburg State junior Mike Stevenson and St. Mary's freshman Andrew Gear (Winters Mill) were named CAC Co-Players of the Week.
Women's tennis: Salisbury sophomore Elaina Iosue was named CAC Player of the Week.
Men's track and field: Frostburg State junior Chauncey Manson and Salisbury junior Jay Drenner (Mount St. Joseph) were selected as CAC Track Athlete and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively. … Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute senior thrower Ja'Mar Watson (Glenelg) was named Liberty League Field Athlete of the Week.
Women's track and field: Johns Hopkins senior distance runner Christina Valerio was named Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week. … Salisbury sophomore thrower Chelsea Tavik (Seton Keough) was selected as CAC Field Athlete of the Week.

Colin Powell selected as grand marshal of Baltimore GP
Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will be the honorary grand marshal for the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix on Sept.4. Powell will give the command to "start your engines" to the field of IndyCar drivers at the start of the 80-lap event. He also will be given the opportunity to take a 180-mph tour of the 2.0-mile temporary street circuit in downtown Baltimore from the passenger seat of an IndyCar two-seater. "The opportunity to be grand marshal for the inaugural Grand Prix is an honor, as it will showcase the city of Baltimore and the beautiful Inner Harbor to a worldwide audience, and I'm very happy to be a part of that," he said. "And I must admit, I'm really looking forward to my 180-mile-per-hour tour of the city."

Catonsville boy chosen for Willinger Fund soccer trip
Zachary Wiley, 11, of Catonsville, who was diagnosed with stage-4 Burkitt's lymphoma in August 2009, will travel with his mother, Jennifer, to San Siro in Milan, Italy, to see AC Milan play Bologna on May 1, thanks to support from the Craig Willinger Fund. The fund, formed in 2009, seeks to improve the lives of children and young adults stricken with cancer by providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience world-class soccer — both domestically and abroad.
