Steelers quarterback and Ravens nemesis Ben Roethlisberger is getting married on July 23, a week before the Steelers are scheduled to report to training camp. He is marrying Ashley Harlan, a Steelers fan whom he met at training camp in August 2005.
There was Internet buzz that Roethlisberger had popped the question late in the 2010 season, but he sidestepped questions from reporters. He recently gave an exclusive interview to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about his upcoming wedding.
"I was surprised at how much media attention it was getting -- it's just an engagement," he said. "I never expected it to be on the front pages of all the papers and websites. There was speculation what our invitations would look like and who is coming. It almost seemed surreal, it was like a movie or something, it was weird."
After he was accused of sexual assault in Georgia last offseason (no charges were filed), Roethlisberger served a four-game suspension at the start of the 2010 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. He said that he and Harlan had been "on and off for five years" before the engagement.
"It's not like a random new person," he said. "We dated awhile ago; we have been friends ever since."
