Fourth-ranked Seton Keough did its best Thursday to slow down St. John's (D.C.), which collected two titles in the past 10 days, but it wasn't enough in the opening round of the Bishop Walsh Invitational Tournament in Cumberland.

Ranked No. 22 in the nation by USA Today, the Cadets (31-2) used their run-and-gun offense to build a 19-9 lead in the first quarter and didn't let the Gators (20-9) get closer than nine as they won, 75-53.

Seton Keough kept switching defenses to try to slow the Cadets, who shot 50 percent in the game. Mariah Jones led the Cadets with 15 points and Amber Singletary had a game-high 16 for the Gators. Achiri Ade had a doubledouble, 14 points and 15 rebounds, for Seton Keough.

St. John's won the D.C. city championship Monday, beating H.D. Woodson, 59-44, and claimed the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Championship with a 62-52 win over Good Counsel on Feb. 28.

In today's second round, Seton Keough plays host Bishop Walsh at 2:45 p.m. and the Cadets face Holy Cross at 5:45.

No. 1 Archbishop Spalding 47, Elizabeth Seton 40: Maggie Morrison had 18 points to power the top-ranked Cavaliers (28-2) past the Roadrunners in the Bishop Walsh Tournament.

Cavaliers broke a 10-10 first-quarter deadlock by outscoring Elizabeth Seton, 9-7, in the second quarter. Spalding finished strong, 14-8, in the fourth quarter.

Spalding faces Good Counsel, which beat Georgetown Visitation, 60-50, tonight at 7:30 p.m.
