College lacrosse players of the week

MEN

Zach Brenneman, Notre Dame

Senior, East Hampton, N.Y., midfielder

He helped the No. 4 Fighting Irish open the season on the right foot with a 12-7 victory over No. 10 Duke on Sunday. Brenneman recorded a career-best five points on three goals and two assists. It was his third consecutive hat trick dating back to last spring, and the performance helped Brenneman — who posted 29 goals and 13 assists last year — earn the Big East's Offensive Player of the Week honor. Brenneman, who was selected as the league's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, was taken with the fifth overall pick in the Major Lacrosse League draft by the Long Island Lizards.

WOMEN

Lauren Schmidt, Stanford

Senior, Bay Shore, N.Y., midfielder

The two-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year led the Cardinal to one of the biggest wins in the program's history, an 11-10 victory over then-No. 5 Syracuse, with two goals and three assists. A national team player, she also had two goals and an assist last week in a 13-12 win over then-No. 10 Notre Dame. Schmidt sparks the Cardinal by playing a key transition role and contributing on both ends of the field.
